GAZA

I really like the disc I have, in spite of/because of? the obvious Neurosis, His Hero Is Gone, Burnt By The Sun and other influences. Vocals are not annoying like Converge, riffs change just before they get too repetitive, dissonance is there without being too stock. I know nothing about this band besides the burnt CD a friend passed on to me, but I would fucking LOVE to play a show with them. Solid m.f. shiznit.

yep, we talked about 'em a bit in the "recommend me some metal" thread.
definitely one of the few metalcore bands that are at all palatable imo.
I can't really listen to either of their records all the way through,
but I've found that when one of their tunes comes up on shuffle,
I always want to turn it up.

I got to "do sound" for them last year here in town. I use that in quotes because my PA at that time could not possibly have a chance of getting the vocals up over the Jucifer-sized guitar rig he built for himself.

Still, I was into it enough to buy their CDs (which is really rare). It's not a style of music I normally gravitate towards, but these guys are doing something right.

Man is that vocal style is wearing pretty goddamn thin by this point. The metre is always the same

<Guttural growl> <Guttural growl> <1 beat rest> <Guttural growl> <Guttural growl><Guttural growl> <1 beat rest> Repeat, for the entirety of your career.

the guy who posted the two new tunes on youtube has them tagged as, amongst others, "progressive-crust". thought that was not only apt, but cool and funny.

first impression: this ain't really breaking new ground. but it's definitely good. these guys have their thing that they do, and i think they do it well. i can already tell it's gonna grow on me. will report back after another, say, 15 listens.

last thing i'll (tentatively) say is, if you like gaza, you're probably going to like this.

Meh.

Sounds like a more "bro" Converge.

Now, Lady Gaza....I'd love to hear.

I'll be seeing them soon here. My buddies band is playing with them at the most popular shithole in Vegas.

Crazy, this opinion. Jon Parkin is one of the top tier lyricists in hardcore/grind/whatever. I'd put him slightly behind JR Hayes and way ahead of Jacob Bannon's NYC youth crew straight edge nonsense. The new GAZA record has been killing me. Probably my favorite release of the year so far.

i think villalobos was referring to the vocal delivery, maybe. parkin's lyrics are legit for sure. i don't think he comes close to hayes, but who does? jon chang is all i can come up with.

but yeah. i have played the shit out of no absolutes so far. no end in sight. great record.

Ah, I can see that. Parker's bellow is somewhat akin to Sean Ingram's on the new record, but thankfully the subject matter is not. Hayes is indeed one of a kind.

Ah man I'm a dilznik... they're on tour and I asked them to play my venue, unfortunately the day I asked, the only open slot in this area on their tour... is Thanksgiving. They got back to me and would potentially do it, but it's too risky. Fuck.
