This sealed it for me. I can pick any album from Out Of Cold Storage to put on and have my mind blown. I'm guilty of not hearing so much of CAN's later material, but the earlier stuff was enough to keep me interested for a very long time.

Plus we played the S/T This Heat LP in the shop last night after closing down and it flipped all my co-workers' lids. That record is something else.

I'll give my vote to This Heat.

Can is great, but never wrote melodies as good as some of those on Deceit or the song Health & Efficiency. That's ultimately what sways me.

Very different bands, but This Heat by a mile. They did an awful lot in just a few releases, and most of it was phenomenal.

I've never heard This Heat, so I gotta go with Can, whom I like very much, especially when Malcolm Mooney is singing.

There are precious few bands that I could put above the band responsible for Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Soundtracks, Future Days, and to a slightly lesser extent, Monster Movie and 1968, Those albums alone forgive any of their transgressions after Damo left the band.

CAN.

Can is, of course, an amazing band. This Heat is something else entirely. I know these sorts of threads can get loaded with hyperbole, but there is precious little as good as This Heat.

On a side note, "Horizontal Hold" has been looping in my head the past few days.

Can are more 'important'. Influential, whatever. and there is no better drummer in the history of recorded music.

but at the moment, I'd rather listen to This Heat. I heard them for the first time about six months ago, and it sounded kind of familiar... because it was exactly the kind of music I'd been WANTING to hear for a long while. Like I knew that there must have been a band that sounded like that out there somewhere, some time. I felt like I'd been plagiarising them without even having heard them before.

This Heat.

Two phenomenal bands. How can anyone not pick Can though? I suspect even This Heat would pick Can.

This Heat were great and all, but Can feel so much more substantial and kickass. Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days... Not a whole lot can compete with that.
I don't need the people of Athens any more than I need another hole in my head. I've got five already, thank you very much.

Can made propulsive, minimalist, intellectually engaging music.

This Heat did all of that plus stimulate my darkest sensibilities with both wit and humor.
They had a singular unique worldview that they exactingly exposited with an uncomfortable and claustrophobic sound. The only material that has come close to a similar evocation is early Swans and gleams of Void, yet neither were as challenging.

On a good day I can have a very firm understanding of Can's anthropology, whereas This Heat sound removed from any petty associations I can come up with.

This Heat.

I've been listening to CAN nonstop these last few days and this thread popped back into my mind.

CAN is still letting me take my time discovering where they're coming from and I love that. This Heat rules and is quite possibly the best band ever, but I've heard their albums so many times it feels like I've got their outlook and approach "figured out" (I know I don't know shit about their perspective, but the familiarity of their records is making them not have the same impact as when I first heard them. Still, Out Of Cold Storage is the best piece of music I own and NOTHING will take away from my love for This Heat).

When I listen to Tago Mago, something new jumps out at me all the time and when I had already thought the record clicked with me, it shows me a different angle to approach it and steps that respect and admiration for their music up twenty notches.

If I hadn't already voted, I don't know if I'd vote at all in this thread. They're both too good to me.

And nothing beats the excitement of showing someone This Heat for the first time ever. A common reaction from friends hearing the S/T for the first time are:

"This was recorded in 1979? What the fuck. This is amazing." .....followed by silence and wide eyes.

This Heat records make me feel like I'm doing homework. I like SOME of their ideas a lot... but there's often something in the execution that doesn't work for me.

Can however... unfuckwithable.
