A couple of you have posted approvingly about these ladies elsewhere, who have been kicking around L.A. for years. Last year they finally released their debut, The Fool, on Rough Trade. Gotta say, not really moved by it. Middling indie rock, unoffensive postpunk aesthetics, forgettable songs. Good drummer, but they never really rock. Nothing to really text home about here.

Ready made for the fake palace of indie rock that is The Troubadour. Crap.

I listened to this record, but it seemed to be lacking something. It's difficult to put my finger on what it is. Just seemed a bit... flat. Missing that quintessence. Kept sounding like it had potential to be awesome, and then, well, not being awesome.

Totally agree. It's just missing that thing.

I heard a song on the radio last night I really dug. The middle section was weak, but the verses were good. Lots of reverb and a nice memorable melody.

Man, just when I thought Karen Carpenter enjoyed herself behind the kit, I find this.

Infectious drumming, yo. Saluts! all around.

I enjoyed their set at Coachella via YouTube. I'd pay to see them live, not sure about buying a record. Not crap.

I think it's going to be one I have to listen to several times. First impression is that it is a lesser record. I loved The Fool so I'm going to let this one seep in.

I felt that way too, and I hope the new one will have it.

On a recent trip to Foxwoods, my pal and I (also an ex-music biz dude) listened to this in the car and dissected it, trying to figure out why, exactly, it didn't work as expected. We never figured out.

Hooks are not strong enough, plain and simple. It's a pleasant atmosphere they create, pleasant sounds, but some strong hooks in the vocal melody lines that would bring it into 'really good' territory are missing. they ALMOST get there routinely, just never goes over the top, ends up as forgettable. Their overall THING is memorable and interesting, but I could not hum one of the songs right now.

See? It's ALMOST really good, all the pieces are there for something but I can't remember anything about it after it's done

A band named "Warpaint" needs to sound more like it's getting ready to go to war, that's what's missing. It'd be fine if they were called "Facepaint."

Right. Like, as in what tribes put on their faces right before they go to war.

NC. Minor waffles for the stupid stuff at the beginning of this video. Music is good. Drummer is amazing. Bassist is great. Guitars are good. This live recording is much better than how it was recorded.

It's also a slang term used when going out clubbing or something. Putting on warpaint... lots and lots of eyeshadow/lipstick/mascara, etc.
