The standout moment of the interview is the minute or two where he talks about how groundbreaking the recording and drum sound was on The Band's Big Pink, an album I've never connected with. But according to Waters, drums had never been mic'd and up front in the mix where you really felt the kick. I'd be curious to hear others' thoughts on this. News to me.

Just to follow up. Roger Waters says the drum sound on Big Pink was pivotal for rock recording. Can anyone comment on whether this is a thing?

I think it's more accurate to say that the straightforward, naturalistic sound of the Band and the Big Pink album, coming as it did at a time when psychedelia as a sound/style was peaking, was hugely influential within the rock music community, especially in England. This is something that Eric Clapton has also talked about at length.

The Big Pink album didn't do that well commercially, but as an overall artistic statement it was a revelation to a lot of the British rockers who were burnt on wah-wahs and white rooms and looking for a way out whether they realized it or not.

Yeah, I just thought it was weird that he singled out the drum sound.

I don't know if I can take this show anymore!

Maron has this quirk where he says "Really? Is that true?" and Steve Jones, after talking about his abusive stepfather, finally had enough: "Of course it's true! Why do you keep asking me if things are true?"

That doesn't drive me nearly as nuts as "Is that guy still around?" Just browse Wikipedia for a couple minutes before the interview, find out if Paul Cook is still alive. Sheesh almighty.

That was especially bad. Jones says "Well I was molested by my stepfather when I was 10." And like you say, Maron replies "Really? Is that true?"

Great work, Marc.

I mostly checked out of this podcast a couple years ago, but I still check out episodes with people I care about or I'm curious about. Always skip the intros though. Just hearing Maron's loud "HEY folks!" opening makes me want to shut the shit off.

Dave,
I would say that episode was actually FUCKED UP.

The constant asking him, "Is that true", which I think was just reflexive, came back to bite him in the ass when Steve Jones opened up about the abuse in his life.

"Is that true?"

!!!!!!!!!

What the fuck indeed.

I can't stand it when he interviews musicians. The pits.

Yep. Springsteen was a rare exception. It's interesting that before that particular interview he talked about how he was just going to try and connect with him -- that's what he used to do for all of them. This allows for doing no research and going in blind. Somewhere along the line he seems to have forgotten this.

I swear when I last checked the site it said Ice Cube was supposed to be today. Did I just image this? Now it says Will Arnett (ZzZzZzZ). I was really excited for Ice Cube. I want them to connect. :(

If you see Ryan Adams talking to me at a party and me politely nodding, will you please interject by telling me that my car is about to be towed? Thanks.

I'm not sure if I told this story elsewhere on the forum but last year, during SXSW, after watching Bob Mould do a 'secret show' at Frank, my friend Morgan and his partner Kayleigh, were talking to Mr. Mould and he had to excuse himself from the conversation because Ryan Adams kept texting him and he was worried about him, or was worried that if he didn't respond Ryan Adams would freak out; it was hilarious.

I enjoyed the Mark Mothersbaugh interview particularly the discussion about putting subliminal messages in advertising early in his soundtrack career.

That was a good one.

I like when he interviews old directors, who tend to be great interviews. It would make sense that they'd be natural storytellers, I guess!

The Billy West interview is REALLY good -- tragic, funny, riveting. Mostly because Billy takes control and just keeps plowing through his stories even as Maron punctuates every pause with a "Right" or "Yeah."

Enjoyed the Phil Elverum interview. It started off a little disjointed, but it fell into a deep groove. I hope this leads to more recognition for Mount Eerie, maybe a Terry Gross interview or something. That new album is important and needs to be heard.

Dave, totally agree. That went places I wasn't expecting. An overused word, sure, but it was raw as heck.

What is going on with the first guest on today's show? Is that a skit?

Maron's had some good guests lately.
