Comic Artist/Writer: Todd McFarlane

Postby punch_the_lion on Tue Dec 20, 2011 5:45 pm

I was a fan of his Hulk and Amazing Spider-Man/Spider-Man runs as a kid back in the late eighties/nineties. I bought the first issue of Spawn when it came out. Not Crap for nostalgia :WF: for turning into another corporate sellout. Although in retrospect, most of those artists that formed Image turned out to be one trick ponies.

Now that I am no longer eight years old, Spawn now is laughably bad for the most part. Also, McFarlane is a huge hypocrite for trying to claim ownership of Angela, despite being created by Neil Gaiman, for when Gaiman wrote Spawn #9 for him.

I recently sold all my Spawn and other Image stuff and it turns out it's all uber-cheap/damned near worthless. As in, "Oh hey, stuff for my $5 dollar and $1 bin" at the comic book shop. Even my older issues, like Spawn #10 (the meta-comic with Cerebus written by David Sim, wtf).

Damn. There goes my pension plan. Anyone got a time machine, so I can tell young Tom to save the money he spent on polybags and backing boards and just go spend it on drugs instead?

Thanks.

He definitely had a unique style. But have you seen an interview with him? Check out Todd Mcfarlane: The Devil You Know on Netflix. This guy is batshit crazy. Listening to him talk about how he is will make you squirm.

Crap.

Even if you only judged the guy based on Spawn, the storyline was an unmitigated disaster.

That I go into a comic book store and still see Spawn issues, when you know, he was supposed to die or something like that because of his time on earth being timed, etc., is hilariously stupid. Good Lord.

No different than Superman being resurrected or any other Marvel character they have been recycling for the last fifty years.

Like Spawn, I haven't read a "super hero" comic from DC or Marvel since grade school. I got back into Marvel for a little bit because of Onslaught, but then when they did what they did just to restart the storylines, etc., I stopped caring again.

I was actually dumb enough to ask what the deal was with the new Spawn title.

The final fate of Al Simmons and how it led to the new title is too goofy to relate.

I always thought he drew a kickass Spider-Man and a hideous Mary Jane Watson.

I liked his artwork for Spiderman and Ghost Rider. I had lost interest in superhero comics by the time spawn came out and have never read it and know nothing about it.

If you think about it, the fact that he kind of reinvented the look of Spiderman without actually changing his costumes was quite an accomplishment. Really had a unique style while still staying true to the superhero genre.
