CRAP, Waffle Factor of 5.

Playing a signature instrument seems inherently cheesy to me, particularly if there are super-obvious signifiers that it's a signature instrument. I'm thinking of stuff like "SRV" on the pickguard or "Costello" on the fretboard or whatever.

That said, like Bill Swansea, I have gotten interested in certain guitars because of who plays/played them, but I think that's a little different.

AND, if I was given one of those Gene Simmons Kramer axe basses or guitars with the aluminum neck, I'd play it. Same goes for a Paul Stanely Ibanez Iceman with all the mirrored hardware. I wouldn't pay for these things, but I'd play them without irony.

EDIT: I just saw pldms's post and the Costello Jazzmaster doesn't appear to say "Costello" on the fretboard, so I'd play that. He and a few others are the reasons I decided to try out a Jazzmaster to begin with, and that finish is awesome.
I play in The Family Ghost.

Yeah, that's a beaut!

I would love one of these:

Steve Harris Signature P-bass
(the first model, in West Ham colours)

and I have an unaccountable soft spot for these:

I don't owe these kids anything, man. I mean, I owe them my entire life, obviously.

If it's a nice instrument, I'd have no issue playing one (unless it had SRV written across it in gihugic mother-of-pearl inlay or some bullshit). I probably wouldn't buy one if it meant paying extra money for having a name attached to it, if that's the only difference between the signature instrument and the non-signature instrument.

Speaking of signature that sucks, I think the worst one in the world is the Kerry King one.

I play the Geddy Lee sig j-bass. It's got GL's signature in a very unobtrusive spot, the backside of the headstock. Nothing else has a neck like it, at least that I've seen.

And for the record, I don't like Rush.
I count to prime numbers and strum tonal clusters with Radiant Republic.

Bass in the Heavy Bombers We're on the PRF Singles Comp Q1.

Sax with Begin By Gathering Supplies.

I don't know what I did in Loex.

The posthumous stuff is a little exploitative, and the reproduced but distressed w/cigarette burns and stickers is just silly unless you're in a tribute band that strives for authenticity.

Zakk Wylde's is way worse than that, at least that's an actual guitar, ugly, but just a ugly flying V

I'd play a signature instrument, but not because of the artist's endorsement of it. It would be because I like the specific features of the model.

I used to have a Robert Cray strat but do not enjoy his music.

I like it when not particularly renowned guitarists have signature guitars. Elvis Costello is a good one. I love his early work with The Attractions but dude isn't a particularly great guitarist. Awesome.

With the possible exception of some bazillion dollar custom shop thing I think that is the nicest bass Fender is making right now.

That cockbag endorses a pretty damn nice distortion box, too.
