Enjoying them a lot at the moment, but their odd, discordant riffs are nothing new. Check out Immolation, especially Here in After and Close to a World Below. I'm sure they had at least some influence on Portal.

Portal, Gorguts and Demilich are my favorite death metal bands ever. In that order.

NOT CRAP.

Ive always thought of them as like the bastard children of Cthulhu, Immolation and older Morbid Angel stuff. Those little noisey bee swarm bursts they do remind me alot of some of the riffs Trey Azagthoth busted out back in the Altars of Madness/Blessed Are The Sick days.

Theyve definitely been my #1 favorite death/black/metal band since the first moment I heard them back in like 2007/8. Nobody has matched the atmosphere that Portal creates. Seepia was fucking nuts. Outre blew me away. And Swarth just went pure evil. I am STILL mad at myself for missing them the one time they actually came to Los Angeles and played down in Compton of all places.

Like Ive said before what the fuck is in the water down there in Australia that produced two of the heaviest most awesome bands ever, Portal and the almighty HALO?

If more metal was as mind-blowing as PORTAL, I would like metal more.

Way NC.

It's still THAT kind of metal. Ugh.

Riffs and atmosphere are excellent.

Blast-beat (or whatever that is) is godawful as usual. Go to hell. CRAP.

edit:

Actually, more I listen to Swarth more I like it. They nailed a thing called the evil.

Portal, it is for me.

NOT CRAP.

What's a good starting point with this band?
I used to play guitar for Elma and Buistra, and bass for Are You God?.
More recently did these:
Vermes do Limbo + Bernardo Pacheco /-/ Berna And The Gangstas

Ok, I just heard that new track and it was very NC, also sounded great. Is it typical of their music? I don't see the Gorguts comparison, though, other than both bands being describable as "discordant".

Swarth is very similar in style to the new stuff.. Whats really setting this one apart is the 'cleaner' production on it.. Outre as awesome as it was is a murky mess, but thats probably what they were going for anyways.. Seepia is a bit cleaner then Outre as well, at least the guitar riffs are a bit easier to make out (but theyre still playing some really out there shit).
Fuck I cant wait for the new one to hit.

Holding my fingers in front of my face in the shape of a crucifix is my usual response to 'experimental metal' but on the back of Swarth and this new song I think PORTAL sound pretty awesome. Guitarist has got the Caspar Brötzmann rubble tone down.

Some of my friends were dumb enough to think that those goons interviewed in that video were actually PORTAL.

It's a good troll on the fans though.

A couple of the guys in PORTAL are in a band called Impetuous Ritual (they fucking rule) and they played out here last year. Apparently they're really nice guys. Drink a lot and were down to rage like any metal band should be.

I cant remember which one, but in the comments of one of the many live YouTube clips, someone mentions the singer is an Indian dude that works in a restaurant the commenter frequented.. I wanna say his name was Sanjiv or something but Im pretty sure Im just confusing him with the original singer of Carcass heh.
