In/Humanity was a Powerviolence band from Columbia, South Carolina, erroneously designated as screamo.

you might like these guys. they call themselves emo violence, which is possibly even more idiotic than screamo, but they sound pretty good.

And they add a twist to that 90s trend of naming your punk band after real people. (E.g.-Charles Bronson, Yaphet Kotto.)

oh yeah. all that early shit on gravity was somethin' else. the "emo violence" stuff was good too. all of it. i like all of it. actually, i think someone invented the word "skrams" or some such to distinguish between early period ("real") screamo, and the later stuff, which is all bad rubbish.

You in toronto? You should come to the mountain far fest they're putting off in august. I'm coming to see it from st johns (lined up with a family visit nicely). Mainly going to see alaskan. They're my second favorite canadian metal band, after monument of swords.

Nah, I'm not in Toronto. My friend moved there after getting a good job.

Is that the one with "song in a" on one side? Of course it does.

I still like a lot of the stuff that would now being labeled as screamo or whatever. In/humanity, Palatka, Current, Indian Summer, Clikatat Ikatowi, Antioch Arrow, 12 Hour Turn, Swing Kids, etc. are all bands I still enjoy. The more standard screamy bands like Grade were pretty much crap though.

Southeast emo violence represent or something like that. I still wear the same sweaters but the high waters were retired long ago. Look at those hot green drums. They are still the only kit I play. Tremont Music Hall, Charlotte, NC 1996:

I didn't realize it at the time, but Clay sorta dressed like Michael Jackson circa 1981 if he had been into professional wrestling rather than Diana Ross.

More proof that the only "real" Dice Man resides in the mind of one Mark E. Smith...

The only real Dice Man resides in the mind of Luke Rhinehart, who wrote the novel The Dice Man, which MES was referring to in the song.

'Tis shocking that I would actually learn something today as a result of a photo of Andrew "Dice" Clay being posted on the internet.

Thank you, young friend. For decades I assumed this song was about gambling. Life's full of surprises.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled hair-splitting about teary-eyed, post-emo genres that I'm way too old to identify w/...

I can see maybe being into this stuff when you're 14 and going through some tough stuff. It would probably feel really extreme and skin-peeling and cathartic.

A lot of my pals listened to this stuff back in high school. It always felt weird to me. The stage banter was always so "Yeah, we're in this together, let's relate," but the music, and more importantly, the screaming, do everything they can to isolate the listener.

That's my take, at least.

Edit: I'm being too kind. I hate this shit. I'll listen to Ziggy Stardust, you expose your angst some more.

Not crap when I was 19 and had yet to find a proper psychologist and/or bigger life's mission to help me overcome what felt like the world weighing on my shoulders.

(Me, me, me -- since then it's become us, us, us. That helps a lot.)

Not worth classifying either way now -- it's of a time and an age; I hope all those that were making it have since moved on and entered society on terms that work for them.

hah. i was at this show. actually, i was at pretty much every My Lai show.

looking back, a lot of it was silly but I can still dig the really good bands from that era: four hundred years, twelve hour turn, my lai...hmmm...thats about all i can think of.

I liked these guys, who could be related to screamo somewhat, I guess:

I play guitar in Elma. Listen here or download the record for free here.
