Oh this looks really neat! It's on Steam for 3 bucks. Seems people liked the second one, too.

The entire series is a lot of fun. I played the original a lot. So much replay ability/fun with it.

Jedi Knight was great, and I spent a lot of time playing it. Once fans figured out how to create entirely new levels, my social life was over for a year. I wonder if those awesome fan levels are still out there...

I loved the Dark Forces series but the thing that always irritated me about Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast was the damn lightsaber fighting. Theres absolutely no strategy or method to it at all. You just keep clicking the mouse and hope you land a hit before someone else whacks you. I had it on my Mac where my roommate had it on his PC. He was at the end of the game already so I said fuck it lets try this last boss. Walked right up, smacked her once and bam game was over. Took me fucking days to get through that on my Mac when I finally caught up and got to the end.

Been playing Doom Ultimate and Doom II all day today because of my enjoyment of this:

These games are shit compared to Quake and Doom. IMHO, you are not missing anything.

this is so completetly backwards that I am astonished.

I have played Halo and liked it, but Call of Duty, especially the Modern Warfare ones and Battlefiled 3 are so completely amazing and fun that I can only assume you have not played them.

yeah, I played Doom and Quake back in the day. The new games blow them away.

I played only COD and COD2 due to old computer I have, and those are both fantastic games. Still, I think the best FPP I played was Half-Life.

I love doom. I especially loved spending 4 hours trying to get a modem game going.

Has anyone made a game of Doom in reverse? Just a dude running around a building and you trying to kill him? Kind of like Dungeon Siege,

or better yet, just a game of a dude with a gun chasing you down. And you just got to run man...

I've played all those games. At least, these newer ones, which I think is what we are talking about. I mentioned I had some laughs in B3, and I like some of the mechanics, but by and large I find all these games to be reeeaaaaaally boring. I mean, they're definitely better than nothing - unless you're talking about the single player campaigns. In that case, I would strongly recommend the nothing.
I'm too spoiled by dynamic shooters with tight movement, and actual balance.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, but I have an assumption as well, which is that you did not know what those games were when you were playing them, and the freedom that they allowed you. They don't make any money, but people are still making games like that.

Man, that sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I swear that the latter idea is actually a game... I can't think of it though.

If anything, Doom holds up better now than ever. Playing it reminds you that the reason it was so successful in the first place is because it's so fast and tense and fun. A great game, still better than most of its million and one descendants.

Finally got to play it when I bought it a few years later for the N64.

Doom on the N64 is a completely different game, by the way. And not as good. The maps are entirely different.

I remember Dungeon_Keeper was built around a similar theme, but I've never played it.

Check out Mirror's Edge. It's a first person platformer/parkour game where you're running from cops in a future dystopia. It has its problems but I've played through it about 4-5 times.

I really liked Mirror's Edge. Not as good as Doom, but at least it's something different for a change. Really fantastic art direction. Being a not-particularly replayable single-player game, you ought to be able to buy a copy for pennies these days.

Cut-scenes and story are all rubbish though. Ugly too - so much for the fantastic art direction. Skip all that.

I used to play this game often. It's fun, but not as transcendent or different as its press or some writers think. It's good RTS with some rudimentary FPS mixed in. That you control "the bad guys" doesn't mean the gameplay is much different from the norm.

I thought it was quite clever how the game was set up, so that the end result of you playing this RTS was to effectively build a dungeon, of the sort you might find in a typical dungeon crawler. In that sense it crosses genre boundaries, because the gameplay is certainly not like a dungeon crawler. It's an RTS that generates dungeon crawler maps as a side-effect. That's an idea which has loads of untapped potential.

I liked Wolf, Doom, Quake, and Duke back in the day. Quite a bit. Though I never spent a whole ton of time on them.

Best FPS I've played is probably Vice City. Cause it's got a whole lot more than just runnin around. Cars with radios, nice touch.

Aha! See! Nah just joshing.
I'm not alluding to any sort of specific transcendence, I'm talking about the kind of video games that they were, and why they were so good.

Isn't Vice City third person?

Y'all should check out Dishonored, that shit is LEGIT. Especially if you enjoy games like Theif or Deus Ex, where you don't really have to shoot anyone.

Sometimes it's first, sometimes it's third.

Sniper rifle is first person for example
