It's usually good to just leave people alone, I think, but there's one guy who plays in a band I really like and if I hadn't met him before one of their shows and kept in touch with him afterwards on the internet he might not have agreed to do a song for my new movie. When I approached him in person it was just as a fan, not as a potential collaborator, but it was a lot easier for me to ask him if he would be interested in the project after we became friendly acquaintances and he had a better idea of where I'm coming from. If I was in his position I would definitely prefer to meet someone in person before getting an email from them asking me for something.
