C/NC: Video Game Music

Postby atomjackfuser on Thu Jun 27, 2013 6:06 pm

From the 8-bit days to the present. Original (not licensed) music written specifically for video games.

Love it?
Hate it?
Respect it?

IMHO, this is not really a black and white issue. It is also kind of broad. However, what do you think?

Annoying, stupid bloop-bleep garbage that only appeals to the players of these time-wasting games.

for modern games, the Skyrim soundtrack is phenomenal. totally listenable outside the context of the game too

Too broad a topic to make a sweeping vote about. You might as well say "movie scores" or "rock music."

Can't vote.

Copy that. There's too much to just give a "thumb up" or "thumbs down". Plenty of dreadful stuff/some things I love.

Crap with some waffles I guess.

The first thing I do after installing a game and setting up options is turn off the music. There are some exceptions to this but mostly I prefer the music to be absent. Especially in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series where atmosphere and ambient sounds are an essential component. Even higher quality music on games in the Elder Scrolls series get repetitive after awhile and quite irritating to me.

I'm into old 8 bit chip tunes of yore. Was totally obsessed with NES in 2nd/3rd grade. Epsecially this:

yaledelay wrote:Metroid for the win.

So good. Castlevania and Strider had some good jams too. Nothing was better than Metroid though.

I liked when video game music was limited by its hardware and that the music was actually being "performed" on little synth chips inside the cartridges. It was kinda warbly and irregular at times, like notes would randomly hang and stuff. Now you have endless storage and just throw any prerecorded shit on a disc.

If I hadn't grown up with this I'd probably have no love for it. I mean, I know where Zom is coming from is what I'm saying.

Good call! Streets of Rage 2 had a fucking killer soundtrack.

Almost all of the old Mega Man games had some awesome music. The Mega Man 3 title screen music remains a favorite of mine.

Damn, that used to get me pumped to kick so much robot ass.

Had that game as a kid. Loved it. If I remember right, it was originally supposed to be based off the Terminator movies, hence the similarity in look, sound, etc.

An unprecedented prog-rock epic of a theme for an otherwise indistinct puzzle game:
