I don't mean to compare this band to Fugazi, either. I understand the guitarist is of a different school, but this track does not succeed on a prog level or on a punk rock level. Every time he stops licking and soloing and repeats the riff, it's like the energy of the song reverts to 0. They need another melodic player - guitarist or otherwise - or a singer.

I would be kinder if I knew anyone in in the band, but since I don't, I'll say this is bad music. Totally forgettable, unremarkable, uninteresting music.

Nah, they just need a SONG(S). This would be totally fine if they actually wrote a song. The one I heard was barely even an idea.

I've heard the record and it's fantastic! Gorgeous moments mixed with fun, exciting parts. I think when you hear the entire record, that song fits in a cool way. "Serpent's Tongue" is sort of the "Pull the Cup" of the record.

If you're not into instrumental, 3 piece, guitar-based stuff, it might not be your bag.

Haven't heard the recorded album yet, but I listened to this last night...

...and thought it was... pretty darn good, with some great moments. Did occasionally want someone to grab the microphone and yell a funny or provocative couplet or two on top of it, but all in all I think the new band is Not Crap.

Naysayers, let's see what you guys are doing creatively when you're that age.

I never understand this argument. I cannot play an instrument to save my life. Should I enjoy all music by all musicians because I can't create a song with a gun held to my head?

I love these dudes, but it's not my bag...even though I don't have an album I recorded to fight it with.

No, you're entitled to your opinions, like everyone else. But if someone's doing the "heavy lifting" of writing songs, playing in a band, making recordings, etc., it carries more weight somehow. I guess I find it more admirable to play in a pretty cool band in one's fifties (when that's very uncommon where I live) than to readily dismiss it on the internet after hearing one song. Granted, listening to that whole set was what sold me on the group. Wouldn't mind seeing them live.

I'll give you that. Playing in a band is indeed more admirable than making comments on a message board.

Therefore, logically speaking, "Serpent Tongue" is good song after all!

(BTW, snarky comments aside, I will be thrilled if the album is good...just not feeling this first song! Ever hear some of them recent Devo records?)

I thought that sounded pretty great. I hope the whole album is instrumental. If that's their Pull The Cup then I'm extra excited for the rest. I really liked how lean he transformed the last flourish with 30 seconds left. Can't wait.

Edit: after listening again , last flourish isn't really any leaner.
I must have imagined it.

Yes FMGMER that would be pretty sweet if they just joined this band.
That would be pretty amazing and sort of unheard of ?
At the least, I'd like to assume that Joe no longer lives in Italy and we are one step closer to them paying again. I predicted early 2020s in another thread but I hope to wrong and will apologize if it's earlier. But I won't be sorry.
But he's right. It would be amazing if Ian and Guy just joined this band. His post would be instant HOF.

It reminds me of Psychic Paramount and Trans Am quite a bit .
And I don't really have problems when bands sound like other bands .
If the shit's good I don't have a problem. I also don't think that a band gets to have dominion over a certain aesthetic. Bookkeepers care about that stuff. Cannibalism is good for art.
It's better than good reasons.

It sounds like The Process of Weeding Out with a better recording job.

I like it a lot.

I don't hear it, there's none of the idiosyncrasies of late period instrumental Black Flag.

I thought the track was decent, but too much on the jam band side (felt the same way about the live vids that popped out recently). Would listen to the full record and give it a go. So far nothing the ex-Fugazis did post-hiatus blew my mind, not that these people haven't done plenty of that already.

Yeesh, very boring song that is.

Would probably enjoy it very much in live setting tho.
Unless they change their infrastructure, they're not ready for a punk show.

Its not bad, the guitar even sounds very Iommi at times, but Ginn? Nah its missing all the Coltrane freak-out chaos of that era of Black Flag.
