Film: Arrival

Postby the finger genius on Sun Nov 13, 2016 12:57 pm

I had really been looking forward to seeing this for a while, and it was really nice to get out of my own head for a little while this morning. I thought, and had feelings, and those feelings led to some other feelings, and I'm glad I saw it, and glad that I saw it after this week.

Looking forward to this one when it drops in Germany next week. I really like Ted Chiangs work, which this is based on, his short stories(and that is all he writes) are speculative fiction in the way of Lem, Eco and Borges.

It's in a tradition of slightly ponderous and self-important sci-fi films, but I really liked it. Great aliens, interesting - if implausible - central idea, and solid performances from all involved.

I'm really looking forward to this, especially as I'm increasingly finding myself very pro Amy Adams and her acting.

Absolutely loved this.
The 'realness' of the sci fi is refreshing and some of the more human themes really hit home with me for some reason, felt quite emotional at the end and have been thinking about it lots since.

Looking forward to seeing it again

Saw a snippet of an online review, learned it was a thoughtful sci-fi movie that was playing near me. Didn't watch the rest of the review, didn't look up a trailer, didn't read the synopsis, just went.

Glad I did. Suggest you do the same, if that's your jam.

The last five minutes absolutely ruined it for me, almost entirely.

I haven't seen the flick as of this post, but it sounds like it's a rehash of Interstellar.

Four stars out of five; NC/WF:2 (treacle, plus it annoyed me that they put all the cool stuff about linguistics into a twelve-second montage with a voiceover).

Shane Carruth's unrealized, now permanently shelved A Topiary would've killed it dead in terms of science fiction /alien films, judging from the trippy-ass script from 2005 or so that has been available online for ages, but A Topiary would've been a four-hour-long, 2001: A Space Odyssey-level game-changer/mind-melter art film; Arrival is a $50 million multiplex movie with bankable stars and CGI and all that, so my expectations were lower going in.

Thought it was great. Not excruciatingly sentimental, but yeah. Loved the glacial pacing. So happy I didn't watch or read anything about it before going, and most would be better off doing the same.

Spoilers, maybe:

Sure, it glanced over a lot of linguistic stuff but all that needed to be established was that she was the best, which it did. And while there may or may have not have been large gaps in time w/r/t deciphering their language, that fits with the whole idea of the way they experience temporality. I think more could have been said about humans and languages when she was dissecting the sentence for the colonel.

Wanna Make a Baby

Didn't almost ruin it for me, but pretty bad. I liked it an awful lot.
It seems like it's now a requirement that if you're a female lead in serious sci-fi movie, you better gd have a dead relative that is inextricable woven into your existence.

No, it's totally 10-year-old-girl-watchable -- there's hardly any violence, zero gore, no onscreen sex of any kind, and even the R-rated swear words are sparse. I would've loved it as a 10-year-old, I think.
