OK! Spoilerssss

So I really don't understand why they are taking this exquisite corpse approach to the writing.

Why have all 3 not been planned out ahead of time? Why are the directors writing as well? Apparently JJ Abrahams has done a 'Lost' again. He set up mysteries- Rey's parents, who or what Snoke is- but he didn't have answers any more than anyone else. So rather than than a well constructed story, they are making 3 films with people sifting through someone else's work.

For such a big property I would have thought The Mouse would give more of a fuck.

That’s an issue I have as well. It’s more of an issue I have with JJ Abrahams setting up mysteries without having answers for them than how Rian Johnson handled them. I get the feeling that, if Abrahams had the whole trilogy to himself, that he would have rehashed the OT and had that throne room showdown at the end of the third film with Ren turning good again and another starkiller base woulda blowed up and the Porgs would all sing Yub Nub. Also Rey would’ve been a Skywalker or a Kenobi or some bullshit. I’m glad Johnson turned all that on its head. Isn’t abrahams set up to do the Episode 9? I’m worried he’s gonna throw another Death Star into the mix, and we really done need that.

Spoiler, later. Crap.

Me, my sister and my awesome brother in law saw the Last Jedi last night, left it with a trio of shrugs, escalating to a massive in-car rant by my (awesome) brother in law over how much he hated the new AT-ATs. This film did not do much for me, and irritated me with dog legs like the code-breaker/casino sub-plot. A large number of the jokes fell flat. When Rey asks Emo Vader if he could put on a cloak, my reaction was not ha ha, but rather, god yes please do what she says.

Rose is a good addition, poorly served by a sub-plot that went nowhere. Was pleased to see Laura Dern, and thought they wasted her. Benicio Del Toro’s story felt like it was missing a scene in an overlong film.

But I really liked Mark Hamill, and I hope he has a voicemail full of interesting offers. Find myself imagining a very different version of “Lost in Translation” with him instead of Bill Murray. Apart from hearing him in a Batman game, I’ve missed out on what he’s done in the last 35 years, and he’s gained this unusual, gravelly yet deadpan, sometimes impish presence. May not the last we see of him be a coronary while sitting on a rock.

Mark Hamill voiced three characters in the game Full Throttle and you'd never pick him.

That's a treat, thank you. "Full Throttle" passed me by, and I'm not sure I'm patient enough to withstand the whimsical logic of point and click now. (Though as soon as I type that, I remember I did enjoy "Thimbleweed Park" just two months ago.)

Mark Hamill, I wonder when he realised he could talk in so many ways, and I wonder how he learned to.

The 'it's space wizards and lazers movie for kids defenders' wrote:Say, you like punk music, right?
Well, you must really like that band Good Charlotte!
What, you think they suck?
They have electric guitars and play fast and sing about not wanting to grow up!
and look at them; they even look very punk!
How can you like the Ramones and the Clash but not Good Charlotte?
But it's punk music, it's not supposed to be good.
what do you mean there is a difference--they're both punk music bands.
Quit being a hater.
Good Charlotte is a good band and punk is not supposed to be good anyways and you just don't like anything new.

So yeah, the movie blows. I like parts of it but the slow-speed chase where the baddies could have called in the rest of their fleet to wipe out their one and only enemy was fucking dumb. And having heroes mostly defeated by dumb villains is pretty fucking dumb. And the casino planet was fucking dumb. And having the heroes make a bunch of fucking dumb moves for no purpose was fucking dumb. There are other fucking dumb things in the movie but, when the core conflict of the movie exists because all the characters are dumb, they are not really worth enumerating.

I don't know when it became such a Herculean task for movie writers to write a coherent movie that on the most basic level isn't fundamentally fucking dumb--but apparently, we're at that point. If Star Wars is a space wizards and lasers movie for kids--these new movies are the Good Charlotte version of that.

Also I saw the new Star Wars. It was probably too long and had stupid parts mixed with good parts.

Mark Hamill was recently in a pretty charming movie called "Brigsby Bear", everything he does well is on display. Gets to do voices etc.

I really did not enjoy The Last Jedi. It's maybe a good thing that my expectations were trampled with regards to the few interesting mysteries within Force Awakens, but I really felt like it was a total shrug of a movie.

How dare they waste Chewbacca like that. Shame on Disney.
Unless they change their infrastructure, they're not ready for a punk show.

Mark Hamill also voices the character of Skips on the Cartoon Network series “Regular Show.”

The most recent Star Wars movie I saw was the first "prequel" on VHS whenever it came out. Can't remember if I finished it, but I do remember thinking "People lined up around the block, and camped out for days, to see THIS? No wonder the nerds are raging."

If I had the dough and it were available, I would buy a blu-ray boxset of the "de-specialized" versions of A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. I wouldn't mind watching them with my dog, who's never seen an Ewok. But that's about as far as my interest in this franchise could go at this point. The general level of attention it's garnered in the wake of the original three, among children as well as adults, seems WAY overblown.

I do like "space-oriented" things... Am obsessed with the Fermi Paradox and "The Great Filter," am currently reading Liu Cixin's The Dark Forest, am subscribed to Frasier Cain and Jean Michael Godier's YouTube channels, have spent an inordinate amount of time looking at supposed U.F.O. videos on the web, etc., etc. But the re-resurrection of the Star Wars franchise, as seen through the prism of 21st Century Hollywood entertainment values, has no allure. I suppose it's a well that people can return to indefinitely, putting new spins on it, bringing new blood into the fold again and again. But maybe at some point we should put a fork in it.

I guess there will be a new movie every year or two until there are so many Star Wars films that nobody can remember why they ever cared to begin with and it will slowly grind down until there is not a person left on Earth who hasn't had enough of Star Wars.

IIRC, the schedule is every six months for the foreseeable future. Star Wars "episode" films before Christmas, and the Star Wars "stories" (Rouge One, Han Solo, Bobba Fet, etc.) every Spring/Summer until the end of time. Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous/pathetic.
