Haven't heard the new one, but that first tape is alright, and they were alright live around that time too. It's guitar pop. You know guitar-based pop? It's like that.

I remember that they seemed to be getting a disproportionate amount of attention with that first album. For being a pretty standard touring band. Then I learned that their singer/guitarist is Molly Rankin of the Rankin Family. Which is fine, but not irrelevant.

If I had my druthers, they wouldn't spell their name like that or have that name, but, by golly, Antisocialites is some dope-ass shit. That little interlude between "Plimsoll Punks" and "Your Type" should be a goddman song, and that key change in "Your Type"? My stars. Gonna eat this motherfucker up before it's reported that the drummer or bassist improperly touched someone.

Actually, I just heard this band for the first time in the bookstore of a museum about forty-five minutes ago, but despite sounding like so much of what I've hated about the last, oh, fifteen years of indie music, I was floored by the track "Party Police" and asked the staff to play it again so that I'd be able to find the material later.

So badly would I like to hate a band called "Alvvays" with a track called "Party Police," but despite all of that particular sort of reverb that usually reads as "vapid rich kids" to me, I was shocked to discover that I definitely liked it a lot.

Strong melody in that song, strong voice. Sorta like a Scottish '80s/'90s thing. Don't know anything else about the band yet.

To be fair I thought I might enjoy 'em. I'm a sucker for the vibe they're after, like PJ sez, a Scottish '80s/'90s thing. But nothing is quite up to scratch- playing, singing, songs, production. It's an exhausted second-use herbal teabag in audio form; there's a faintest hint of flavour there.

They need to run their next album through a Muntronix T-Booster testicular expansion unit. Maybe work on touching people properly.

Originally I was going to add your sentiment to my druthers, but thought I might be changing the idea of how they want their band to sound. Fwiw I like to imagine a barbed wire-treatment on the songs, but I ain't mad at 'em (save for that terrible name).

I was talking to a friend the other weekend about his touring schedule, because he works at a homeless shelter here in town part of the year when he's not working as a tour manager. He said he was going to Europe with this pop band called Always in the new year. I'd never heard of them and I said it's weird for bands to choose names that are hard to google. And he says, yeah, well they spell it with two V's instead of a W. And I was like, OK. And then we started talking about something else.

Nothing else I've found has been quite this good, but this song alone renders them at least at the level of a Tommy Tutone or something (I mean that as a compliment):

Sounds incredibly naïve and sheltered if you listen closely to the lyrics, but I don't think it matters.

New record sounds more mature lyrically (listening now). They have moments that make me cringe for about a second, but then I am drawn back to how good the songwriting and wash of sound can be. Can't imagine they're too great live, but I'd be willing to see them.

Godfuckingdammit! I like it too!

edit: It never occurred to me, but why is the letter "w" pronounced like "double-u" in English? "Double-vee" would make more sense.
