Fugazi-dome: 3 Songs vs Furniture

Postby Bernardo on Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:19 am

It's 3 Songs all the way for me, I find every track on Furniture to be non descript, and the better counterpart of each one is in the other EP.

Song #1 > Furniture
Joe #1 > Number Five
Break In > Hello Morning

Although 3 Songs is classic, I voted for Furniture on the sheer strength of Hello Morning. I love late (or final) period Fugazi and the intensity of Hello Morning is a blistering supplement to the tempered slow-boil of The Argument. I never really cared for the song Furniture, I had the "original" version of it on that Ritalin Summer boot from 88...but Hello Morning is the shit. At this point, I go back to that song more than any of the (also great) 3 Songs. Also the packaging on the Furniture single is awesome.

Song Number One wins it for 3 Songs. As good a song as they ever released. Other two are pretty good too.

Yes, it's 3 Songs on the strength of "Song #1." Don't think much of the other two though - Joe #1 is kinda plodding, and as I remember Mark Prindle saying, "Break-in" basically sounds like Fugazi playing NY hardcore. It's fine, but I think Guy's singing/impersonation of the guy is the only great part.

"Furniture" the song should have been recorded in 1988 or whenever, it's weak and overserious in 2001. "Number 5" would have been awesome with vocals. I don't usually like when late-period Guy sounds like Damon Albarn, but "Hello morning" is good and I remember thinking I'd enjoy a Guy solo LP in its style.

Good poll

What FM Get dog costumes said. I love Song #1 — the lyrics are especially good; the punk-rock equivalent of a Zen koan.

I don't like the opening track a lot, but Number 5 and Hello morning are both excellent and better than anything on 3 Songs.
