Thunderdome: Powerage vs Tejas

Postby M.H on Sun Feb 25, 2018 4:06 pm

Two of the best rock albums ever created:

Both of these records were released to a mixed reception from critics and fans. Today they’re generally seen as the lull that proceeded each bands' commercial peak. They also tend to be the rock connoisseur's choice for prime examples of master musical craftmanship.

The question is: which album rocks more?

Powerage rocks more.

That's not a criticism of Tejas, but I don't think it really rocks much at all. It just kinda pootles along, all light and breezy. Those pitter-patter drums are the opposite of rocking.

Yeah, if you want a fair fight I'd say change it to Powerage vs Tres Hombres

THIS. I love both, but I'd say Powerage rocks harder. Making it no question against Tejas...

Sure AC/DC rocks more, but Tejas is just better. Those fuckin' drum breaks..

THIS.

Billy Gibbons described it once as "a treasure chest of guitar tones," and the man knows from tone.

Overall their strongest batch of songs, swings like fuck, and Frank Beard on fire.

My favorite ZZ Top album, and a top 20 of all time for me.

Nothing wrong with Powerage, but...

Powerage.

Rocks more.

Better songs.

Better rhythm section.

Better solos.

Sounds better.

not my favourite from either band (TNT / Tres Hombres) but close to the top, I'd say Tejas wins because it's more interesting somehow

Powerage, didn't have to think about it.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

Powerage rocks more, which is the answer to the question posed. Good Thunderdome, though!

Nah, if we were doing an undisputed classic faceoff, it would be Back in Black against Tres Hombres. But that's not so interesting, IMO. You may as well do AC/DC vs ZZ Top.

Powerage and Tejas are both black sheep in each bands' overall discography. They have an oddly melancholy vibe to them and some absolutely clinical and crucial musicianship.

(I considered adding Motörhead's Another Perfect Day into the mix, as it's a similar beast, mood-wise and sonically, but it was the product of a temporary line up and came after their commercial peak.)

Those doubting the power of Tejas - 'Enjoy and Get it on', 'El Diablo' & 'Ten Dollar Man' rock hard. It's a record filled with deep cuts.

I'm not familiar with this ZZ Top record and will go investigate.

If I'm short on time, which song should I expect is going to rule as hard as "Riff Raff"?

None of them. If you go into Tejas expecting to get your face rocked off your head, you're not going to appreciate it at all.

It's a sunbaked tour of the blue highways, around whose every turn lurks a good time that could either end up magic or illegal.

They somehow managed to avoid writing a song entirely about driving to a whorehouse this time around.

Frank Beard has this sneaky beat which he throws into no less than four songs on here, but it never gets tired. Especially on the last minute of “Enjoy and Get It On,” where Billy Gibbons, a national treasure, sneaks up and starts breaking mescal bottles over your head.

Dig it on its own terms. If you're short on time, wait until you're not short on time.

'El Diablo' is a stone cold jam. 'It's Only Love' is what I want the 70's rolling Stones to be but they never are.

Be warned that this album got remixed for cd at some point and the remix is horrible. It's a grimy ass rock and roll album and the remix makes it sound like mid 80's crap with tons of shitty snare reverb and shit. I don't know which version is streaming but if it sounds like cheesy 80's ZZ Top, find another version to listen to immediately.

Yes, be sure to search for vinyl versions of ZZ Top's '70s records on YT.

Almost all the other versions on YT had the 80s digital drums.

If you keep rolling your eyes like that they'll get stuck.
