Not crap-ah!

Hey folks, what are you top 5 favorite Fall bass lines? I nominate: "Jawbone and the Air-Rifle," "The Classical," "Rebellious Jukebox," "Bombast" and "Winter."
I sing and play bass in a band called Dori.

Generally, I loathe AV Club reviews but this one ain't bad.

The Fall’s new album isn’t very good, but so what?

But now I literally have no idea what he’s saying, because the man gave up on proper enunciation approximately three records ago. New Facts Emerge, The Fall’s 32nd (!) album, kicks off with one of those musique concrete snatches of which Smith is so fond—a field recording of what sounds like him banging on an empty pint glass while sarcastically, half-assed singing the chorus of actual first track “Fol De Rol.” It’s an appropriate introduction: Smith spends most of New Facts Emerge sounding like he’s gargling beer and broken teeth, his former, sneeringly enunciated voice now reduced to the phlegmy growl of an old man hectoring passersby outside the pub he’s just been kicked out of. When he does break from snarling, it’s usually to shout the song’s title. Otherwise, my notes are full of a lot of questionable transcriptions. I don’t know that Smith actually bellows “Stop shaking down those frogs!” in the title track, or “The grape jelly!” in “Couples Vs. Jobless Mid 30s”—but I don’t not know that either. There is a song literally titled “O! ZZTRRK Man.” My inquiry as to whether there is a lyrics sheet was met with laughter from the publicist and a “Probably doesn’t know himself!” So much for that.

off the top of my head

I Feel Voxish
Middle Mass
Blindness
Stephen Song (very underrated)
Dktr. Faustus (though probably tied with U.S. 80's-90's on Bend Sinister)

so many great ones to mention.

MES has cancer, unfortunately, not for the first time either. He performed in a wheelchair in Newcastle this week and clearly wants to carry on. This footage is oddly uplifting and certainly not to be pitied.

I very much liked this comment a friend made regarding the current status of the band.

Now, in 2017, spent of health, spent of new directions, spent of nimble hipness to the nuances of the new century, spent of mobility, spent of everything except the surreally regurgitated sardonic rage of the abandoned North that refuses to shut up or die away quietly, Mark E Smith and The Fall might just be about to embark on one of the most significant and scaldingly resonant phases of their career to date. Mark E Smith lives, extraordinarily.

Their early stuff is alright, but I can't get myself to care about this band at all.

this exactly. it just keeps revealing new wrinkles in the magisterial tapestry. yesterdays discovery was that the peel version of Man Whose Head Expanded is miles better than the album version. And "Sinister Waltz", secreted away on the back 9 of a hit and miss mid-period lp may as well be by the Residents. Have about 6 lp's and 15 cd's but so much more to get. Just read a few pages back Imperial wax Solvent is great? Shit now I need that one too. The Complete Peel sessions 6xcd goes for about 40 pounds and is well worth the money

Thans Munter that was great. Criminal the guy is working as a groundsman or whatever. Should be living off a motherfuck load of royalties by now.

So great that S.Lee is such an unashamed fanboy. The bassline question at the end he was fucking giddy with joy. As was I. First thought, he'll answer "Tempo House" or maybe the murderous simplicity of Spectre vs Rector but no, instant answer, "Bombast".

Brix clanged her seppo arse thru it all without clunking shit up too badly but the plastic surgery ffs really?

MES is obviously cock of the century but I still can't hate him

Absolutely, just for the version of "New Puritan" alone. But the rest is great, too.

I like it a lot. Could be 10 minutes shorter, like most Fall albums these days.

skies currently parting for Hex lp. as usual surprised at myself for thinking they wouldnt. following a similair pattern for the last 30 odd times I've bought something by them:

1st listen: tinpot crap. god what a mess
2nd: squall of shit but theres a couple of nuggets in there.
3rd: file it away fuck this (go away but a couple of the monotonous rhythms have sown seed)
4th: god its not all that and a bag of chips I tell myself but some of the those very same chips have started to germinate overni
5th: oh god I see it now, the lotus has revealed itself before the serpent, the mothra has descended from Icarus' cocooned bumcrack

Perverted By Language is the greatest Fall album. Took awhile to get to that opinion, but there it is.

And as to the short discussion above, Imperial Wax Solvent is a solid album. But I like the entire run from Are You Are Missing Winner thru Your Future Our Clutter.

Has anyone heard anything about their Louisville show being re-booked from them having to cancel at Cropped Out? I seem to recall the fest's FB page mentioning they'd make it up . . .
