not crap, I haven't heard much beyond the sixites work, Crypt, AMMusic and Live At the Roundhouse, but based on those, not crap

huge degree of "how-the-fuck-are-they-making-that-sound", esp when looking at the photos of them in smart suits, sitting calmly, looking for all the world like th dullest college jazz group

some of the best early documents of non-academic, non-jazz, atonal imrovised music that i've heard comes from the amm. and, from what i understand, along with hugh davies and the icp, they are somewhat responsible for bridging gaps by blurring the lines between the jazz, academic, and street styles of "avant garde" music at the time. so, not only do they sound cool, but they are rather important, and quite NOT CRAP.

Not Crap, and i'd say that the five most essential records are:

'AMMusic 1966'
'The Crypt'
'Generative Themes'
'Newfoundland'
'Fine'

AMM is (okay, arguably was) a real group, with real group dynamics and a history. This was their strength and distinct quality. Not so much of this within European free improvisation.

Listening to the ReR/Matchless edition of AMMMusic. Finally checked them out because of Eddie Prévost and his playing on select Organum releases. Also checked out his first book through OhioLink, No Sound is Innocent. This shit is awesome. No Sound Is Innocent is so far a fascinating read too.

Isabelle Gall wrote:AMM is (okay, arguably was) a real group.

According to what I've read on the I Hate Music forum, AMM is only AMM if there's at least three people, and two of those people are Keith Rowe and Prévost.

Prévost has claimed that the only reason why he and John Tilbury are billed as "AMM" from time to time is due to public convenience.

Next month, Rowe is performing here in Ohio. Can't fucking wait.

No offense to Isabelle Gall, but if I met a woman who was into AMM I would have to break out my tin foil ring.

Anyway, sometimes boring, but often mind-blowing, AMM is a special group of musicians.

Eddie Prevost is a personal influence.

NOT CRAP.

I was thinking the same thing, but then remembered back to the Harry Pussy thread, and well; it's kind of a deal-breaker for me.

AMM have a lot of brain meltingly dense noise that both sooths and induces headaches. Weird formula. I love some, other stuff I find it hard to get to grips with.

never, ever, EVER crap.

I used to fall asleep to The Crypt, any disc. for all the din created on it, it's really quite relaxing.

AMM III is some comically bad guitar/drum improv jamming. I wonder if the grouchy pricks on the I Hate Music board try to defend that one.

Important band, lots of great music made.

What I meant was that if I met a woman who was into AMM I would probably have to marry her. It seems creepy to say such things on a message board, which is why I prefaced the comment with "no offense."

Bernardo wrote:I thought Isabelle Gall was a guy. No offense.

I didn't know that, but ok, I've been down that road before too. No offense.
