For nearly my entire life I thought Rita Coolidge wrote "We're All Alone." Such a beautiful song bested only by "Didn't I Blow Your Mind (This Time)," but that's a conversation for another thread. Anyway, imagine my surprise that this stupendous song was penned by a dude named Boz Scaggs. I didn't even fucking know who Boz Scaggs was until Steve's lively rendition of "Lido Shuffle" at Drug Church, and even after that I didn't explore further (are you fucking kidding me with "Lowdown"??? Frankie Knuckles could have and probably did drop that in a mix).

Man, Rita Coolidge takes me out of myself when I hear this song, and it took me a minute to get used to Boz's weird-ass warbling, but, goddamn, he nails it and why not, it's his own fucking song. And where Rita's version is very flowery and feminine, Toto ramps that shit up at the end on the original.

Boz Scaggs ain't crap and I will more than likely cry when he's gone.

EDIT: Christ, Rita makes a brother want to rearrange his DNA and shoop, you know what I'm talking about? Can I say that? She's beautiful. I'd shoop with Boz too, I guess. His name is Boz.

Both those songs suck.

There's real gold in the song's big reveal - "Close the window, something light, and it will be all right" but both of those two songs stomp all over it and that's before wheeling out the Los Angeles Philharmonic for chorus two. Dial it way back and let the song fucking happen, you hacks.

Boz's fake opera singing is particularly egregious.

Crap.

Boz Skaggs rules. Lowdown is the funky ass shit and his name sounds like a scumbag '70s heroin dealer.

"Calm the lights," Justin. Calm. I'm getting up in some sort of feel just thinking about it. The chords that kill me are D7, D7/C, Bm7. "Alls forgotten now." I believe there's a Bbdim preceding it. It's the most emotional of all chords.

You know what would make this song better? OK, so, like in "If" by Bread there's that gentle, reverb-y/wave-y/ripple-y effect on the guitar? Pale Saints also use it in "Kinky Love." That. It sounds like dream-pop on nitrous.
