I knew Stereolab would get mostly CRAP votes.

A lot of their material sounds exactly like Neu!, it's funny.

NOT CRAP.

The first time I saw Stereolab it was fun, fun, fun. Everyone onstage seemed to be having a ball, and people in the crowd I knew to be sourpusses were tapping their toes and nodding their heads in spite of themselves. It's all crafty and krauty and feel-good music, but it works on me.

Stereolab... really loungy, electronic music filled with beats, vibes, and pulse. They have a really solid formula for writing songs and creating albums that never seem to let me down. Some albums I like more than others. The best one they ever released was 'Dots and Loops' (IMO). Awesome record... Track 1 (brakhage) alone is worth owning the album. A must have in my record bin. Anyways....

NOT CRAP!!!
I could have been a contender...

one of them died, yes. very sad.

i don't listen to their records, but i have had fun watching this band play live on a couple of occasions. they are entertaining, they found their own little bandwagon and jumped on it before most other people, my wife likes them, and i have no strenuous objections.

I've gotten to see Stereolab live a couple of times, once with O'Rourke playing with them. It was a lot of fun and strangely very loud. Their records, on the other hand, are total crapshoots. The most consistent of their ouvre would have to be "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" everything after "Dots and Loops" kind of mines the same territory, fruitlessly I would I say. I don't know

my girlfriend also likes them a lot. Taking everything into consideration, I would say NOT CRAP, with a girlfriend induced waffle factor of 7.

Didn't they rip off some old black lady?

Not crap, based on Emperor Tomato Ketchup, but they better watch it cuz they're getting dangerously close to the crap zone these daze.

i'm actually most fond of sound dust. The first few songs sound like the 'lab is tuning up the machine and then it gets rocking. It seems to be the most non-monochromatic record of theirs.

I like calling them Stevelab for whatever reason.

not Crap, waffle factor of they're kinda boring at times.

I agree.

Stereolab are a great band in conception and execution. They have got some Neu! about them but I think they are much much more. I reckon they are one the cleverest bands around. Their boringness is their key strength.

Not crap for their driving grooves.

Not crap for their vocal harmonies.

Not crap for their weird analogue sounds.

Not crap for their Marxist lyrics.

Power to the people is what I say. Up with Anglo-French Marxist Rock groups!

That three disc comp that Too Pure released last year is probably one of the best anthology sets I've ever gotten and it's dirt cheap.

me likes The Lab.

sure, they've made some dispensible music, but they've also made some top-notch recordings. i prefer Transient-Random..., the first four or five songs on Peng!, and the a-side to Fluorescences.

also, Laetitia is just dreamy. i had the good fortune of catching Monade last year and i met her briefly and she was very positive, intelligent, and of course beautiful. she was down to earth too, but i still felt a little dizzy.

sure, neu is an influence, but they hardly sound "just like neu!".

in fact, toss in some equal parts of astrud gilberto, suicide (yes, SUICIDE), beach boys, perrey and kingsley, kraftwerk, mbv and wire and you're getting closer.

not crap with a waffle factor for some of their output in the late 90's.

i love the songs "crest" and "noise of carpet"

early sophomore stuff (transient random blah blah blah, emperor tomato, mars audiac quintet) and the most recent stuff is the best in my opinion. in the middle they were waffling on the yuppie adult contemporary/lounge music fence for a while, with music that was better suited for a VW commercial or ian schrager hotel than my headphones..

the earliest stuff, has some great tunes, but it is recorded quite poorly.

plus, they sing about old analog synthesizers and marxism. I can't think of any typical love songs. this alone gets them points.

there are thousands of bands that are doing much worse. and stereolab has kept it up for a while without genre hopping too often.
