They made a video. Looks like the other two LPs will see individual release as well.

2,000 copies. You'll probably be fine.

Well, shit, now that I see they're going to be also releasing the records individually, I might just go that route.

The boxset looks beautiful, though.

Conchis wrote:There's no info on the website about how these were mastered/produced for vinyl, which makes me hesitate. I spent $25 on ebay for a vinyl copy of WhatFunLifeWas back in 2009 and it sounded terrible, much worse than the $4 used CD I already had. Felt foolish for that.

Hi, I mastered the Bedhead box set at Chicago Mastering Service.

With the exception of one or two songs, the entire box set was remastered, from scratch, from the original master tapes. Matt and Bubba Kadane were involved and had the final say over every step of the process.

All vinyl master lacquers were cut on our Neumann VMS70 lathe. Bob Weston cut WhatFunLifeWas, I cut the rest of the LPs.

Regarding WhatFunLifeWas in particular:

1) it is a challenging recording, technically-speaking. They basically put a bunch of microphones all over the place without regard to phase consistency. It was the early 90's, sorry.
2) the circumstances regarding the mastering at time of release were not ideal. Again, the early 90's.
3) the length of the album sides makes for a challenging vinyl cut.

I'm obviously biased, but the Bros and I think the new version of WhatFunLifeWas is a dramatic improvement over the original release. If you love this record and want it on vinyl, I can't imagine a better version than this new Numero release will ever be available.

The rest of the box set's remastering is not as dramatic, but the rest of their records weren't as crazy-sounding, either :)

Hope that helps...

That's awesome. I guess I had at least some faith this would be the case and preordered the whole set shortly after my last post, but it's great to hear that real care was put into this!

That's great, cause I remembering not being that thrilled with my LP of WhatFun. I thought it might be something on my end, something in my stereo setup. But it was such a good record and I found it relatively cheap I didn't care. Can't wait to order this box come payday.

Are the downloads something you have to wait until November for also? (if you make the pre-order)

The download codes are available once you make the pre-order, right after.
:D

In addition to confirming my pre-order, here is the message I received from Numero Group:

Due to popular demand, the Numero Group is paying a brief visit to the 21st
Century to deliver you these popular packets of bits known as MPEG-2 Audio
Layer IIIs, or mp3s as the kids are calling them. Enjoy your digital audio
files by logging back into your account and downloading them to your
preferred device or brain implant.

The boxset is fuckin' beautiful, as expected. '

Excited that I went from lurking discogs for copies of their albums to owning them all in one blast.

Sick.

I never got around to D/L the digital files for the boxed set, so I hope there's an actual card in it.

No download card in mine, though they did put in a handbill from the Lounge Ax and a takeout menu from Crazy Chicken on S. California in the shipping box.

I never downloaded them either, but I almost never listen to anything besides vinyl so I'll be fine with the rips I have off the old CDs or whatever is on Spotify.

Fantastic news. Decided to do a spontaneous Bedhead google news search yesterday, and lo and behold...immediately ordered the vinyl box set. "Beheaded" is on my top five album list. This is the first vinyl box set I've bought. No one else is worthy (well, unless Labradford and Monroe Mustang get on board).

I got this box set Friday. Two thoughts:

1) I nearly cried when I finished the essay just I did when I heard they broke up.

2) I've been listening to the downloaded versions for a month or so now. Less than ideal conditions, to be sure, but necessity precludes sitting in front of a turntable.

WhatFunLifeWas sounds 'cleaner' as does everything else. I'm ashamed of myself, but I'm struggling to point to a single instance where I can say "X changed here." Maybe it's because I'm sort of snow-blind by having heard these songs thousands of times. I'm probably just an impoverished and uninlightened listener.

Can any one point to some specific examples?

A writeup in, of all places, Grantland:
For Matt, going back was like visiting a version of himself that he had worked to grow out of. “Listening to especially the first record, and maybe the other two — especially for me — I was pretty depressed over the course of that band. It bummed me out. I probably shouldn’t admit this to a sports website [laughs], but it made me pretty weepy. I sat down and listened to the first record, and I was overcome by being transported back to that emotional state.”
