I downloaded the 1998 Live FLAC's from the Numero website and the songs sound amazing. The controlled but furious buildup toward the end of Powder is so great - really fun to hear a professionally recorded live version of it, as well as the other ten songs. I discovered Bedhead late, so have only seen The New Year live, and only once, but this is a pretty good next best thing. Great job Numero Group.

Just pissed that I couldn't get the live LP vinyl on Record Store Day. Turns out my local store didn't even order a copy (despite telling me that they would a month ago). And of course there are the usual assholes on ebay trying to make a buck. Fuckers.

Hi, I mastered the Bedhead box set at Chicago Mastering Service.

With the exception of one or two songs, the entire box set was remastered, from scratch, from the original master tapes. Matt and Bubba Kadane were involved and had the final say over every step of the process.

All vinyl master lacquers were cut on our Neumann VMS70 lathe. Bob Weston cut WhatFunLifeWas, I cut the rest of the LPs.

Regarding WhatFunLifeWas in particular:

1) it is a challenging recording, technically-speaking. They basically put a bunch of microphones all over the place without regard to phase consistency. It was the early 90's, sorry.
2) the circumstances regarding the mastering at time of release were not ideal. Again, the early 90's.
3) the length of the album sides makes for a challenging vinyl cut.

I'm obviously biased, but the Bros and I think the new version of WhatFunLifeWas is a dramatic improvement over the original release. If you love this record and want it on vinyl, I can't imagine a better version than this new Numero release will ever be available.

The rest of the box set's remastering is not as dramatic, but the rest of their records weren't as crazy-sounding, either :)

Hope that helps...

For a variety of reasons that are incredibly boring, I've had the re-issues for a couple of months and haven't been able to listen.

I've loved WhatFunLifeWas since it came out. I loved the washed out sound, I've loved how murky it sounded, and I've loved those songs since the minute I heard it. I was really curious how different it would sound when it was "cleaned up." I'm always a little skeptical of the re-mastered thing on principle, and I was skeptical of how this record and my memory of it could be made better.

Fuck. What an incredible improvement. This thing sounds like I'm sitting in the room with them as they are making the record. I had no idea.....it's just remarkable. I know the songs, the melodies and the sounds, but somehow listening to them tonight it's like someone took a cassette of something I once loved and made it into a proper recording. Just stunning. I love this record all over again. It's incredible.

I've really been loving the Numero Group Reissues.
It used to be the other way around in my youth, but I enjoy What Fun Life Was a bit more now than Transaction. A little less busy in the best way.

Re-reading the book that came w/ the box set, and I guess I never realized that a lot of Transaction de Novo has two bass parts. Anyone know what the "tenor" bass situation was?

Rappard, is there any chance of getting a reupload of the four Bedhead recordings? The download links have expired!

NOT CRAP X1000!

I discovered this lot last year after hearing bits and bobs from the Numero box, and they're one of my best discoveries. One of those bands who, when they pop up on shuffle, are never skipped. Their studio output works well in all environments, whether it's cycling, commuting to and from work, relaxing, going to sleep, etc. They make great summer music, just like Yo La Tengo and Lambchop.

Although there are bands that I've accused of making the same album over and over (Clinic, for example) but Bedhead provide a welcome consistency and so many subtle differences at the same time. To my ears, they never get boring. The more of them on tape, the better. I love Bedhead so much!

Yeah, I got 2 bad copies.

I've stopped buying new Numero stuff altogether. If I see something used that I can listen to prior to purchase, that's a different story.

I bought that Numero box set and didn't have issues with any of the records. Kind of concerning to hear that they may not be up to snuff with their QA, though. Has anyone here bought any of their Unwound sets? I was thinking of trying to pick up No Energy at some point in the near future.
