Muse? Not for long...

Postby Rimbaud III on Wed Mar 10, 2004 8:21 am

Muse? They suckle at the teat of the pomp-donkey. Such overblown histrionics should be stricken from any of your record collections. This band write the kind of pompous operatic rock that any self-respecting person should shudder in disgust at. If any of you are wavering in your decision on whether or not to consign this band of shit-eaters to the Stygian recesses of hell, read this:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/friday_review ... 00,00.html

"We hold a press conference in our hotel. Some Russian classical music has been a really big influence on Muse's sound: I love Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. I've always felt that our sound could be a mix between their piano music and really hard rock. I thought that perhaps the Russians had picked up on that influence, that maybe they recognised something of their own culture in it, and that was why we had taken off over there."

Crap.

But in an effort of fairness, i will say that their singer has quite the range, in falsetto anyway.

That is all.

it's sorta chick rock, but i won't dismiss it as complete crap. that's reserved for blatantly shitty musicians/politicians.

I personally enjoy their records. Additionally they are a fulminant live band. I consider their megalomaniacal approach kind of interesting...
It´s such a fine line between stupid and clever.

Belated bump. Heh.

N/C. Origin of Shititry, fair enough. That one's utter spism. Over-written, over-hyped (tautology alert) and over-crap. But the first one, Showbiz, has some fantastic moments on it. And the sounds are pretty vast too. Check out the single Cave. Awesome lyric too - I mean, the chorus is 'Come in my cave.' I'm just hoping he was aware of the angle. Tell me he was, someone.

Nope, have to say I think Placebo are better. That's how bad.
Muse are the antithesis of punk rock for me. The worst of the worst of the worst. I think it has to do with the pompously declaimed fact that they are proper music because of their tortuously studied complexity (I have the same problem with jazz and jazz people). Coupled with vapidly middle class whining lyrics, almost supernatural dullness, and the fact that my band once had to support them at a festival, and you have The Thing I Hate The Most By Far. Urrrrrgh!

It took fucking ages for my friend to convince me that I wasn't listening to Radiohead when I heard Muse.

Kinda reminds me of when I heard the first Stone Temple Pilots hit and thought, "ya know, Pearl Jam should really try something new sometime..."

I'm fine with Placebo - as long as it's the earlier stuff. Believe it or not, it kind of reminds me of a less heavy Bitch Magnet. Whatever.

As for the complexity point, I don't think you've listened to Showbiz. Certainly it's nowhere near as complicated as the later stuff. Supernatural dullness? I dunno. The singles off the first one are pretty strong, to be quite honest. Live they can be shit. Utter shit, in fact. But y'know.

All I'm trying to say is that there was a time when they wrote bloody good indie-rock songs. Maybe it would be better if they'd been raised on a council estate in Wythenshawe. Who knows.

indeed they are all things bombastic and pretensious. I still can't help but like them. The singer does sound like Mr. Radiohead but they have their own thing going on.

label them a guilty pleasure...

Such a shitty band. Amazing how busy and boring their music is all at the same time. Too much everything.

That being said New Born is a great song. I first heard it on the soundtrack for Haute Tension. It's really rockin' with a good groove and has a great bass line throughout. Perfect song to drive a stolen muscle car into the night after a serial killer to.

CRAP! WF 4 for the song New Born.

"Hey! How about we make a band that sounds like Radiohead, except we take out everything that makes Radiohead awesome and replace it with arena-rock melodrama?"

"That sounds like a great idea, Jim! Why don't we pretend to be serious musicians while we're at it?"

"Brilliant! I can talk about Tchaikovsky!"

"No you can't."

"True, but as if the average NME reader can tell."

"unlistenable" is an adjective i like to throw around sometimes when i'm slagging on bands. consider this one of those times.
