Method of fastening pants: Button-fly VS. Zipper throwdown!

Postby Jodi S. on Tue Jul 17, 2007 1:32 pm

In my quest to find the perfect pair of jeans (which would necessitate another topic altogether...trust me on this one) I realized that the key factor to my particular comfort is the button-fly.

I don't know exactly when I first made the switch, but I have been a button fly loyalist for the last 15 years or so. It must have been sometime in college, because I know my mother would never have purchased such jeans for me as a youngster.

In the past three years or so, it seems that most clothing companies that make jeans have abandoned making button fly jeans for women, making me try on endless pairs of men's jeans (which suck for women if you have hips...or an ass.)

I have asked a lot of people why this is, and nobody seems to have a definitive answer other than "women don't usually buy button fly jeans."

I know that's false, because I am a woman and I buy button fly jeans. I also know that while I have some strange tendencies, preferring this type of jeans cannot possibly be one of them.

So which way do you prefer? I reckon this is sort of like the Hydrox vs. Oreo question in that it reveals a lot about your character.

I'm cool with either one. (Being male, the button-fly is definitely "safer".....especially if you drink.)

I have noticed, though, that if you have a few pairs of each you'll tend to always think you're wearing button-flys which puts unnecessary wear on your zipper-flys when you try to "tear" them apart from the top (non-existing) button. I've sent a couple pairs of perfectly good trousers to an early grave this way.

Ya just gotta check, I suppose.

I hate the button fly! Too much messing about! I need zipper action...

Yesterday, I went through my closet and found a pair. I gave them to Goodwill...

I prefer the zipper, but not by much. The only problem I have with buttonfly jeans is trying to use a urinal. I end up unbuttoning the whole thing, then standing there with my pants all the way open, which is not necessarily what I want.

I am stunned!

I thought for sure that the discerning people of the PRF would be button fly people.

I'm going with button flys. The zippers on my jeans, for whatever reason, always seem to break/not work properly after a while.

Zippers at half mast is not a good look.

Nope...there's a quickness & efficiency associated with a zipper that just can't be achieved by a series of buttons. Sure, it's more dangerous, but with a little practice, you get good at not catching yourself in the zip-up.

I've never had a problem, and nothing gets between me and my wranglers. I think I've only got caught once in maybe 15 years of it. You just gotta pay special attention if you're going to take it out. seems fair enough.

I've never even worn a pair of button-flys, now that I think about it.

am I missing something?

Holy sheepshit, whomever created that video has a sticker collection. Button-fly zippers are okay for the kids, no good in a nursing home. CRAP

As a frequent victim of Spontaneous Need To Urinate syndrome, I prefer the zipper fly. There is nothing worse than being nearly crumpled up on the floor of a bathroom somewhere, attempting to unfasten a line of buttons impeding one's desperate effort to void a brimming bladder.

Also, I find that the buttons look bulky and less sleek when covered by a fitted shirt, whereas the zipper seems to remain flush with the rest of the stomach/groin region and produce a more slimming line.

The downside to zippers is that (when worn by parties other than myself) they tend to get caught on my tights or stockings whilst engaging in carnal antics. I have several pair of nice fishnets or vintage silk thigh-highs which have been ruined by accidental snaggings on the zippers of others.
