Honestly, I'm not very familiar with these guys, but "Final Solution" has to be one of my favorite songs ever.

I have been listening to Dub Housing and New Picnic Time quite a bit recently. Not crap even while contemplating their descent into crap and rise (some anyway) but over.

Yes, yes, and yes--the first two albums (Modern Dance, Dub Housing) are essential, as are the non-album early singles, collected on the Terminal Tower album. I too have a soft spot for New Picnic Time. As for the later stuff, I lost track of them in the early 90s, although I did catch one of the first shows with Tom Herman back in the band (mid-90s) and Lord, it was fine to be alive, on the Earth, and in that room on that night. Later shows were also good, but that night was special.

If you ever see the Datapanik box set, buy it.

a fine band

'fine' in the most complimentary sense o' the word

i saw them just a couple years ago, and it was a great show

d.t. has gained yet more weight. he had on an electrified vinyl apron, and he was drinkin' something or other from a flask all night.

Some amazing stuff early on to be sure, but I can't stand to listen to anything after Dub Housing. I'd still go see them live, but I'd cross my fingers and hope that they stick to the older stuff.

Regretfully, CRAP.

See, this is where you are wrong. The statement above is false, you see. Pere Ubu are in fact NOT CRAP.

The same applies for when I saw Rocket From the Tombs last December. Makes me feel a bit better about being a big fat guy in a rock band. I know I've mentioned that before, but I thought it merited mentioning again. He seriously got into it with the guy who was trying to videotape the show, which was cool, I thought.

Seriously. Those early few albums and the singles compiled on Terminal Tower are some of my favorites. Dub Housing might be my very favorite, but every Pere Ubu album is good in its own way. Varying degrees of good, but good nonetheless. NOT CRAP.

I can't say i love listening to their records all the way through, but you could make a pretty amazing mixtape of all the albums up to and including 'the art of walking'.

If we just keep handing out NOT CRAPs to every band that has one or two really good albums...

I don't know. Pere Ubu as I have chosen to know them (up to "Dub Housing" or maybe "New Picnic Time,") is NOT CRAP, but "Cloudland?" "Story Of My Life?" COME ON!

Part of the fun of Crap/Not Crap is tipping sacred cows.

"Dub Housing" holds it's own to this very day as a fucking incredible LP.

It functions perfectly for the record store hipster bubble burst scenario.

Step 1: Put on "Dub Housing"
Step 2: Watch kid with TRAIL OF DEAD shirt look up, squint, and bob head.
Step 3: Let kid approach you and ask "who is this?"
Step 4: Answer, "PERE UBU"
Step 5: Let kid ask, "is this new? what year did it come out?"
Step 6: Answer, "1979."

Step 7: Go home and rearrange 10 inch records, cry silently to sleep.
But I digress. Please continue with the squirrel circuit semantic debate.

We might run out of web-enabled radio buttons? No seriously, where are we going with this?

I have to agree that Pere Ubu was not crap musically, but sometimes David Thomas' voice makes me want to punch holes in my ears.
I never thought I'd recover from the trouble that Youtube put me through...

No.

No, no, no.

Pere Ubu is not one of those 'the first record was great, but everything else was crap' bands.

No.

Pennsylvania (for example) is fairly recent and NOT CRAP.

I don't really understand your point.

I like 'I against I' and 'Quickness' by Bad Brains plenty.

I realise that those are not the Bad Brains records that one is 'supposed' to like, but they are my favourite BB's records. Neither BB record would be in my list of 'favourite records'. Bad Brains would not be in my list of 'favourite bands ever'.

I dont think my point was that complicated.

Wait, on top of all this you like Quickness?

Ok, I think Ive got it "sorted."

Your taste is "rubbish."
