Pick one.

(I searched. It doesn't look like this has been done.)

Today I'll say: Ramones. They were first.

"First" in that they predated the Sex Pistols. Also Joey was never a Republican.

The Sex Pistols did more in one album than the Ramones did in 20+ years.

Whatever. I listen to the Ramones' first album all the time. I *never* listen to Never Mind the Bollocks any more. This is a clear, key indicator of quality.

I'd rather hear the Ramones over the Pistols, but I'd rather hear P.I.L. over the Ramones.

At times I would too, but "Ramones vs. Sex Pistols And/Or PiL" is not the conversation I had in mind.

Further to 242sumner: Joey was a liberal, Johnny we know about, DeeDee I don't think even HAD political opinions, I have no idea what Tommy's views were/are, and latter-day Ramones don't count, so unless you know stuff I don't or have some other perspective you didn't explain, your description "Republican band" seems a little off.

Are you saying the Ramones only made one good album? If so, I beg to differ. Leave Home? Rocket to Russia? C'mon, those are fantastic.

Personally, I just pick and choose songs. Not every song on their first or second album was a killer. The Anthology's pretty much where I go for my Ramones fix.

One thing I would like to point out is my personal take of the complete and utter difference between the two bands.
The Sex Pistols emerged from a generation of Brits who were fucked with and lied to and that resulted in them making the music and the lyrics that they did.
The Ramones were a group of guys who loved bubblegum pop and wanted to do that, but as a rock band.

Oh. Yes. Joke. OK. I should call it an evening, maybe.

And yeah, there's some less-than-stellar stuff on the first three Ramones albums and not much development from one to the next, but for quantity and quality of recorded output they put the Sex Pistols to shame. Not that recorded output is the be-all and end-all, just a factor. I am too fried to even want to attempt some sort of comparative analysis of the two bands' Overall Cultural Impact, but others are welcome to do so.

For Overall Cultural Impact, I gotta go with the Sex Pistols. The Ramones practically had no culture (or social issues to gripe about), or mindset besides rock & roll.

For catchy as fuck songs about growing up and being apathetic, I go with the Ramones. For Snot nosed anger, and sarcasm, SP. You can't really go wrong either way.

I suppose this is a meaningless question, really. Just wondered what people would say.

No, the Ramones could and would never have written anything as excoriating as "Holidays In The Sun." They didn't need to. Joey singing "I'm a Nazi schatze" said it all, in terms of FUCK YOU. England NEEDED something as pointed the Sex Pistols, and they stepped up and raised the ante beyond anything ever seen in rock music before, including Elvis, the Beatles, and the Ramones; they transcended the genre and then self-destructed. But the Ramones were the better band.

Are you fucking kidding?
Ever hear the Sex Pistols' cover of "No Fun" from that last show?
They get into that Kraut-Rock groove and stretch the song out to like 7 or 8 minutes.
The Ramones could never have done that.
The couldn't have even have come up with an intro to a song like the intro to "Bodies" if their life depended on it.
Also Paul Cook is easily one of the most underrated drummers ever because he could actually groove like a Belgian monk brewing beer and never bothered with flashy drumming. I rate him behind Ringo as one of the best drummers ever.
The only thing that the Ramones have going for them is that they lasted longer.
The fact that they were around long enough to be able to build up a decent enough amount of songs to warrant a greatest hits album is something the Sex Pistols never had a chance to do.

I didn't say the Ramones were better musicians or songwriters than the Sex Pistols, though both contentions do seem debatable. I just think were a better rock band. The fact that they did what they did without the added input and support of a manager with his own agenda giving them great clothes and feeding them stuff about Situationism or whatever makes them all the more impressive as a band, to me.

...I was not really very impressed by Steve Jones or either Sex Pistols bassist. It's possible that I've underestimated Paul Cook, but ... you rate Ringo as one of the best rock drummers ever? Seriously? Is this a commonly held view? I had no idea.
