Label Thunderdome: Touch & Go vs. Dischord

Use whatever criteria you'd like - catalog, ethics, # of free band stickers thrown in with your online order, whatever.

For me, it's Touch & Go. I've liked more of their bands for a longer period of time, and they've been very consistent.

Plus, the T&G 25th festival was just untouchable. It's very close, but T&G win.

I included the Quarterstick roster in my comparison. T&G it is.

Though the current roster has many bands I would never care about, the number of records that I listen to constantly from this label [T&G] far outnumber Dischord's. Many of T&G's records certainly figure into my top 50 records list.

Touch and Go also seems to have an original and unified sound much of the time. That's cool.

Not a hard decision.

last time i checked, Lungfish records have the Dischord logo on them, so obviously..

but really, Dischord has put out stuff that'll always mean more to me. also, the way the label influenced its local community which in turn influenced the label and so on is inspiring.

Touch and Go easily for me. T&G vs. SST would be a harder call.

well, SST had saint vitus and the screaming trees, and some OK (but not the best) bad brains releases, but that's not quite enough when compared to touch and go. touch and go's best bands are (more or less) about as good as the aforementioned SST bands, but the great ones of T&G are far more numerous than the best of SST (vitus, trees, black flag). the rest of the SST catalogue (sonic youth, minutemen, husker du, etc) doesn't match up to the better t&g releases.

i like fugazi more than everything touch and go has ever put out. but touch and go has more good stuff in quantity. that said, in a thunderdome where one disappears from our minds forever, it would have to be touch and go because losing fugazi, lungfish, a couple shudder to think releases, the warmers and hoover would be too sad.

T&G is awesome. I can't give up Fugazi, though.

Touch and Go.

And exactly how does Minor Threat beat out Negative Approach? Also, I'll take Mule and the Laughing Hyenas over Fugazi and, um, Pailhead.

I mean, I dig MacKaye and all but this is Negative Approach we're talking about here...

Two labels full of stuff I love. (especially if you include quarterstick w/ t&g)

I'll go what is apparently the unpopular route here and say Dischord wins it.

It comes down to who had more bands I don't like.

T&G

!!!
CocoRosie
TV on the Radio
Urge Overkill
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Dischord

Faraquet
Fire Party
French Toast
Beefeater/ Fidelity Jones

About an even number of awful bands, but Dischord's sins seem far more forgivable than an Urge Overkill or a CocoRosie.

After looking at this thread, I realized how little attention I have paid to Dischord since it's earliest days. It's like at some point they dropped off the map for me.

T & G, on the other hand, even though I'm more familiar with their earlier bands, has always been on my radar.

T & G wins.
