The Kyuss poll made me think of this. Definately a bit more "doomy" and heavier/harsher than Kyuss, but I put on "Sleep's Holy Mountain" when I need to scratch my stoner rock itch.

Outstanding band. I wish they were still around.

I'm glad Matt Pike's still coming up with great music in High on Fire.

Dazzling Killmen had the extreme fortune to open for Sleep and Neurosis for 3 shows in San Fran., LA and San Diego back in 1994. Totally intense.

"This song's called Dopesmoker".

oh yes indeed!
don't you think the start of "Jerusalem/Dopesmoker" sounds like the Imperial march from Star Wars (TM Lucasfilm)?

That rocked.

Nick, you're forgetting the line though, it was right after they set up: "Hey, we're Sleep. This is our last song, it's called Dopesmoker."

Al has a new band that I have yet to hear. I can't really see High on Fire any more, i need to keep the last shreds of my hearing for my twilight years. Love those guys.

Oh! Thanks for the clarification.

Those guys had their own special vocabulary, I seem to remember.

After we played in San Diego, Matt said to me: "Dude....wall.........prison...." and smiled.

Yes.

Would the "kids on their bikes looking for cats to kill" scene in Gummo have been filled with such evil portent if that Sleep riff weren't playing in the background? Hell no!

Not crap.

And High on Fire's just gonna be heavier than ever now that they have Joe Preston in the band (tho who wants to lay a wager on how long he's in the band? He's a terminal loner?).

How have i been on this board all this time and not even searched for this poll?! I shoe-horn them into enough other topics.

Dopesmoker. Dopesmoker. Dopesmoker. A molten lava flow of a song. Lyrics so beyond bad they become awesome and frightening. Anyone even remotely interested in heavy music needs to have this in their collection. And Matt Pike seems like an extremely nice guy to boot. Oh how jealous i am of the show you guys mention up there.

I pray for them to get back together after a few more High on Fire and Om records.

NC. WF 0.

It won't be long, coach.

I'll have everyone here know that I saw a Thrones show with approximately 14 people in the audience. Probably the best show I've ever seen. When Joe's on he is SO on and puts on a bitchin' show.

Sleep=NC (goes w/out saying)

Coincidentally I am listening to DOPESMOKER at work.

I had JERUSALEM, so I never bothered getting it, because I was told it was exactly the same. It isn't, and now I feel the need to listen to them both pretty much every day.

So Sleep = NC with a vengeance.

After a few years of sort of abandoning the slooow doomy bass heavy guitar stuff, I am back, and I gotta say that I dunno what I was thinking when I gave up Earth, Sleep, and their ilk for...dance music.

Please forgive me, and allow me to keep my guitars.

You know, I was on the El today on my way to work jammin on some dopesmoker and this old lady in front of me told me to turn my headphones down. So sleep is not crap but listening to sleep with volume set to seven on a noisy train because an old lady in front of you told you it was too loud is fucking crapola.

I'm glad you came to your senses. My interventions, despite their good intentions, can be traumatic. (There's a ball of resin the size of your head, a life-size, anatomically correct papier mache doll of Matt Pike, and a lot weeping.)
