The Smiths were perhaps better musically, but Morrissey's voice grates on me WAY more than Michael Stipe's. I actually kind of like Stipe's little drawl whereas Morrissey makes me want to punch things. I have to side with the Peaches.

I can't listen to The Smiths for more than five minutes anymore, so REM.

This is a good one. I'm not a huge fan of either one of these bands but I'm finding it pretty tough to decide. I like Johnny Marr's guitar playing better than Peter Buck's.....and Morrisey is funny to me...Michael Stipe, not so much. I guess the Smiths. Thing is...I think REM have written better songs...so maybe the Athens Boys Choir? Dunno...meh......fuck both of 'em.

Smiths were way more "waaaaa"! R.E.M. for the win.

The Smiths, by quite a wide margin.

Hard to say. The Smiths broke up before they made the best album they had in them, while R.E.M. took the $80 million from Warner Bros. after their best stuff was in the rearview mirror. Reckon it's a draw.

Are we voting on which band makes better music, or which are the more clever strategists?

The Smiths, though I hardly ever listen to them anymore. But they mattered to me way back when. I can't say the same for REM.

i unapologetically love both of these bands. both of them were integral parts of my adolescence. my initial impulse is to give the vote to the smiths, as the first time i heard them, i was 14, on the beaches of estonia, with two older artschool deathrock girls, drinking vodka and smoking marlboro reds. obviously any music that i heard then would have made a devastating impression.

thing is, tho, finding a busted up 5th gen cassette dub of 'fables of the reconstruction' in the gutter when i was walking to school made a similarly devastating impression - and there weren't even any boobs or black eyeliner involved.

rem came with a wider of variety of emotions - sure, there were plenty of yearning/wistful/i'm mopey songs, but there were also plenty whee! i'm carefree! let's roll down the windows and smile about something songs too... the smiths were/are great for melancholy, but they weren't very good at capturing excitement or recklessness or being young and happy.

rem wins.

I like REM's first ep and two full lengths more than anything by the Smiths.

For me, it's no contest. The Smiths. There's only a handful of REM songs I like.

Natalie Portman spreading her legs to 'How Soon Is Now' is good enough for me & as Mr.Jimmy Spako rightly said, they had better tunes. The Smiths

I love both of these bands too. I believe I mentioned that it always struck me as coincidence that these two groups existed at the same time and yet were completely unaware of each other's existence. Both groups were relatively populist with distinctive guitarists and literate, enigmatic homosexuals for frontmen.

I believe that the very best songs by the Smiths trump REM but overall, the latter group have made many more good records over a longer period of time.
