Thunderdome: Tom Waits vs. Nick Cave

Postby enframed on Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:22 pm

I did a search and didn't find this battle. Leave The Birthday Party out of it, this is a solo endeavor.

Both croon, both are "dark" and humorous.

If you had to pick one to listen to for the rest of your life, who would it be?

For this kind of fake-o, schtick music, I grudgingly prefer Tom Waits. I'm embarrassed to admit that I like him.

Nick Cave's post-Birthday Party stuff doesn't cut it for me.

This is a dangerous game. Nick Cave will win, but I vote for Tom Waits, no problem.

I like them both a lot. I think I like the first three Bad Seeds records better than a lot of Tom Waits except for Heart Attack and Vine. Tough call.

I know I am not supposed to consider the Birthday Party, but c'mon. I can't think of Iggy without the Stooges. I can't think of Nick without the Birthday Party.

I go with Nick, by a beard hair.

This hasn't been done? Jeese.

Fuck their music, who would yall rather hang out with? I think Waits, but that's based on his public persona which for all I know is completely artificial. Nick Cave doesn't act like he would want to hang out with anyone unless they have a fist-sized bag of smack. Waits, I feel like we could pass the bottle and shoot the shit, easy. Could be the opposite in real life for all I know.

From my understanding of reality you would be disappointed with both men from what you seem to expect. And from what i have read on the internets.

Family men, the both of 'em.

Nick seems to still drink and smoke.
Waits might try to get you to do yoga and go to his kids field hockey game.

Cave for at least the hanging out.

Man, most of Tom Waits music never really grabbed me like I thought it should have.

Both men are funny and great showmen. However, I've listened to Nick Cave more.

Plus, Waits is a bit more unfortunately shmaltz-prone.

The staff weren't giving me the things I needed to do my job effectively and give the kids their money's worth...it wasn't too hard considering the concert was only $5

I absolutely cannot choose. I sat here thinking about it and came to the conclusion that I like them both equally, albeit for different reasons. Shit. I hate that I can't make a choice.

Waits writes better songs. He has a better voice. He doesn't make it quite as obvious when he's goofing off.

Far as I can tell his shtick is actually straight through to the bone. I read an interview with him where he was talking about recording and commented that playing the sousaphone is like dancing with a really fat lady.
