Minor Threat didn't write one bad song. Black Flag.... Uh there's several stinkers in their discography.

Then there's the whole Rollins factor. That's a Waffle House of it's own.

This is actually hard for me, but not because I listen to either band too often. When I was younger I always preferred early Black Flag more than most anything Minor Threat ever released, but now I don't really ever reach for anything of Flags (or MT's for that matter). I always feel like I have been missing out on what makes Minor Threat so specifically special to most people and I'd really like that feeling to click before I make up my mind here.

So I will hold out to vote, but as of now I'd choose Black Flag, almost purely for their first two records. Plus Greg Ginn's guitar tone on Nervous Breakdown is just incredible.

Minor Threat. Each guy was great. All their songs are good and well-arranged. Nervous Breakdown sets a high watermark, but a short one too.

Both singers sound more serious and self-righteous than anyone has a right to be, but one of the great things about Ian MacKaye is that he pulls that off, song after song.

Black Flag didn't know when to quit. Minor Threat maybe quit too soon, but it was a graceful exit.

Minor Threat. Excellent, succinct discography.

Flag was a great band with many, many awesome moments and the four bars are still great visual iconography, but they rambled too far afield and dabbled too often with wankish "I can't express myself! I try, but it's NO USE!" and "Man, the SYSTEM, man!" type lyrics.

I gotta give it to Ian & crew. Although Robo was a motherfucker of a drummer.

Lyle's stint in Samhain cancels out Brian Baker's post-Minor Threat gaffes.

I used to like Black Flag a lot but now can only hear the very first early recordings: Keith Morris - Chavo era.

I like pretty much everything I've heard by Minor Threat.

Yeah, this actually made me guffaw when I read the title. Nervous Breakdown and Jealous Again are pretty great but come on, against Minor Threat even their good stuff sounds positively silly.

Bad Brains Vs. Minor Threat would be kind of interesting I guess.

I'm curious though... what if cranky wanky Hank had never been in Flag? How would that swing the poll?

Yeah, basically sums it up. "The first four years" is amazing, but, the Whole Rollins era destroys it for me. MT came first for my ears, and led me to the Flag, so I'm a little biased, shit, I gotta go put on the Out Of Step EP and wake the wife up.

This really didn't happen before?

Damaged and The First Four Years are great but come on now.

There's so much hilarious shite in the Black Flag discography that another singer wouldn't make much difference.

I seem to recall originally the Flag were looking to Washington DC for a new singer because they were trying to coax Ian Mackaye into replacing Dez. Obviously Mackaye refused but recommended Rollins. I don't actually hate Hank, I think they would have started to suck regardless.

Damaged isn't a bad record, but in an ideal universe (fat chance) they should've changed their name after doing My War with two guitars.

I remember listening to Get In The Van and just thinking "Dude... you hate EVERYTHING."

Totally agree. If Black Flag's official catalog had been limited to The First Four Years, Damaged and an officially released/mixed/mastered 1982 My War (e.g. the '82 demos as done by the Dez/Dukowski/Biscuits lineup), that would be enough to make me shift my vote over to the Flag. As it is, nope haha no way in HELL.

Minor Threat. I know the dudes in MT were sober there for a while until their last batch of EPs when everyone but Ian started drinking beer, but once I heard the song the Flag's Drinking and Driving , I stopped listening to anything beyond Jealous Again.

Boombats wrote:I'm curious though... what if cranky wanky Hank had never been in Flag? How would that swing the poll?

This was the deal breaker for me.

If Black Flag would've called it a day after Jealous Again, I'd go with the Flag. If one looks at their discography it's easy to see where they started smoking weed and listening to Black Sabbath records, only it didn't pay off as much as anyone could've hoped.

Some of those records are unlistenable. I do like My War a good deal though.
