Triodome: Minutemen vs. Husker Du vs. Nomeansno

Postby SecondEdition on Wed Sep 15, 2010 10:25 am

I've concocted this Triodome because torturing all of you gives me such pleasure.

Have fun!

(I realize, to a degree, that this dome is very much an apples and oranges comparison. However, they do all share similar attributes. Every band was staggeringly instrumentally talented. All of the bands were extremely original in their combination of extremely emotional hardcore punk with other genres (funk, '60's pop, '70's prog). All of the bands used very trebly guitar sounds. Two bands had extremely active and upfront bassists, while all of them had great-to-incredible drummers. All of the bands were incredibly intense during different stages of their respective careers. Every band had a distinctive, unique, personal and wonderful approach to songwriting. And every band featured extremely charismatic singers: two bands had "regular guy"-esque type singers, while the other band had two singers who could hit more notes than the others.)
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

In the someday, what's that sound.

I like all three but only Husker Du have real emotional significance to me, literally because their records were deeply inspiring as a teenager, going through all the things you do at that age. Of the three, I'd argue that the music of both NMN and the Minutemen was better overall but still, Husker Du for me.

I don't like the Minutemen.

While I like the Nonmeansno stuff I've heard well enough, it's never inspired me to delve deeply into their catalog.

Some Husker Du hasn't dated well, but their best stuff still sounds as good to me now as it did fifteen or twenty years ago.

Some thunderdomes are difficult, but this ain't one of them. Husker Du.

For me it's between NMN and HD, I never liked The Minutemen. This is tough. NMN, I think. They meant more to me as a teenager. Yeah, NMN. Plus their records were the best recorded of the three.

Well, early predictions are always wrong; I thought barely anyone would vote for Husker Du. The Minutemen are so popular on this forum that I thought they'd sweep it, with Nomeansno (the math-y band) coming in second. So who knows?

I can't quite decide, yet.

Minutemen, probably better than Husker Du overall. But I like Husker Du more.

I don't think NMN is a patch on either of them.

I have never heard Nomeansno but I very much doubt they would have the same impact on me as Husker Du does.

NMN are different than the other two in many ways, but to which "class" they belong is not one of them.

I'm with Tommy. Husker Du.

Like a few others here, I never really liked the Minutemen. Don't dislike them, they just don't resonate with me.

NoMeansNo is awesome live, their records are pretty good.

Yeah. Husker Du.

With a username like FuzzBob, you get one guess how I'm voting.

Needless to say, Hüsker Dü meant the universe to me as an angsty, lovelorn teen/twentysomething. Funny thing is, that music is aging with me and means a lot to me now as a domesticated thirtysomething hurtling toward middle age, for different reasons. Last year, a high school friend died of a heart attack. This year, "If you don't stop to smell the roses now/They might end up on you" has maybe five times the poignancy it did when I was 22.

I get the feeling that when I'm 70, and friends and loved ones really start shuffling off this mortal coil, I'll probably mourn by blasting Hüsker Dü.

Nomeansno was a big deal for me when I was getting into music, and I still love the stuff of theirs I loved back then (haven't heard anything after Worldhood...).

It took me many years to warm up to the minutemen, when they finally clicked with me it was not in such a big way, even though I think they're great.

Husker Du, well, I think Zen Arcade is incredible, but don't have time for more than that.

NMN.

Minutemen. Husker Du, as good as they were, never meant anything to me. It didn't resonate at all. I can't even make it through a single album of theirs, but I can play two or three minutemen albums on repeat, and not tire of it. Nonmeansno weren't even in the same league.

Minutemen. I didn't like them at first, mostly because the first album I listened to of theirs was 3-Way Tie for Last. Then I got Double Nickels on the Dime, and all was better.

Husker Du has grown a bit on me now after hearing a few songs not on Zen Arcade, but I don't know if they'll ever be as big for me as for other people, having begun listening to them in my late twenties. Also Zen Arcade has grown on me. I bought it after being told by many reputable sources that it was the greatest album ever, and in my book it is not. Listening to it without having such high standards, I'm enjoying it much more. But Doubhle Nickels is way better.

I honestly know nothing of Nomeansno. I will have to look into this.

I stopped listening to NMN after 0+2=1, which I still mostly don't like, but everything before is incredible, and a few good songs have made it onto records since.

I have trouble putting into words what NMN does that is so unique. Of course I think the music is great, and coming off of 70's prog, mainly King Crimson and some Yes, it should be obvious why NMN's music would appeal to me. The music, at the time, was pretty unique (though I think it probably still is).

I think what it comes down to, for me, is that while Husker Du and Minutemen, to me, are the sound of a marginalized subculture or frustrated youth, anger with the world, etc; ultimately, for me the music and lyrics express the feelings and/or experiences of a group of people, with which individuals may identify; there is a certain amount of commiseration in them, and therefore certain amount of hope.

Nomeansno, to me, expresses those of the marginalized individual, for whom there is no group with which to identify. In my youth this greatly appealed to me, and still does.

I am surprised that The Minutemen are so far behind Husker Du, I imagined it'd have been closer. I'm not surprised that NMN is behind.

NMN has certainly meant the most to me as a kick-ass live band that I've seen more than just about any other, beginning with all ages shows.

By some sort of "objective" criteria--figuring the cultural and aesthetic impact of the bands--people likely have a point that NMN isn't in the same league as Husker and Minutemen.
