Goddamnit.

Will edit after destroying my consciousness and forcing myself to rank these a-fucking-mazing bands.

EDIT:

Alright, here we go . . .

1. Joy Division. Absolutely! I've played the hell out of their records, and "Disorder" and "Digital" rank among two of the most perfect songs I've ever heard. A band totally essential to my tastes, listenings, and own music. Each member adds his own flare to make the music one of a kind (and not without guys attempting to sound like Joy Division). Just one of my favorite bands ever, I guess.

2. The Fall. One immense discography, probably the band I own the most studio albums out of (21 last time I counted). A few waffles in the 90s keep them from being the most consistently amazing band ever. They possessed an ability to make repetitive music into some of the greatest songs ever written, and in their prime each member provided distinct and easily recognizable parts to some extraordinary albums (Hanley's bass, especially). Mark E. Smith has always been a one-of-a-kind frontman and has some of the greatest, if not most offbeat, lyrics ever. They're only not #1 because they tend to be formulaic for better or worse, and because I don't get off on a lot of rockabilly.

3. Public Image Ltd. Barring This Is What You Want, I love every record they put out until 9, where the direction of the band went nowhere after the surprisingly awesome Happy? Jah Wobble provided me some of the first mindfucks with his dub influenced bass, and John Lydon managed to come out of the Sex Pistols with an amazing artistic vision. Granted, every record has an off song or two on it. Still, they took me through avant garde and krautrock and industrial and dub and made me realize that rock music still had a million places left to go when I thought everything was going to be Nirvana-retread forever. I appreciate that!

4. Gang Of Four. One of the best seething, sloganeering, scratchy guitar bands out there. I'd already accepted the Manic Street Preachers and Joe Strummer as my political parallels in music when I first heard Entertainment! so I never learned much from their political side. But the disco funk with that jagged guitar was more than amazing enough for repeated listens. Their first two EPs and albums are golden in my eyes, but that drop off to dance music hurts this band's legacy for my rankings.

5. Wire. Must've got into them too late. First two are their best work in my eyes, 154 was great in its best spots but it had its flaws, and from then on I don't follow the band. To me, they were always somewhat of a British Pere Ubu, which I appreciated, but I'd had too much post-punk background to honestly embrace this band as much as I did the other four. Still amazing, still love those records, but last in line for me personally.

I love all five bands, I consider them all totally necessary for someone wanting to explore a side of music that remains unique on almost all levels (despite what Interpol and Co. have attempted to do), and this ranking was hell.

JOY DIVISION.

All great bands, but Joy Division is the best. Better than any band you care to name.

I can't even rank the rest because I love Public Image Ltd. and Wire about equally, in spite of Wire's substantially better track record.

This is one hell of a poll.

the fall have it for longevity, but talking about peak period, gang of four wins. i don't think 'songs of the free' is necessarily a bigger step down than 154. there's some terrible, patience-testing stuff on the latter.

joy division are the only band that didn't record anything bad due to certain special circumstances. they also have the best live album despite being the worst performers. i don't think the recent fashion appropriations (the sneakers, ipod, urban outfitters tees, the lame biopic and indie dramedy references) could ever cheapen this music for me.

PiL had their moments and were sorta funny, but they aren't in the same league as the others.

oh i guess there's this: http://www.electricalaudio.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=29928

Darn! A near-perfect 4-way kerble by toneburst_country, right out of the gate. That'll teach me not to search before starting a new topic.

Sure. Or Swell Maps, or whoever. This was a semi-intentionally ridiculous C/NC "dome" anyway. Enjoy! :D

Like I mentioned in the Gang of Four vs Minutemen thread, if I could limit GO4's discography to Entertainment I'd pick them in basically any Thunderdome. But as it stands, The Fall, with Joy Division and GO4 tied for close second.

If they were included in the poll, quite possibly.

Since they aren't, PiL.

Who else do you think I would vote for?

For the record and all, I'm pretty surprised Ace is voting for Joy Division.

Most people would agree with you.

I'd probably rank it:

PiL
Joy Division
Wire
The Fall
Gang of Four

I have not heard much of The Fall. I have heard all of Joy Division, PiL, and Gang of Four. Wire's first three records put them clearly ahead of all for me, with slight waffles for much of the rest of their catalog. Wire, with apologies to Mark E. Smith, whom I have never invested the time in.

RANK!

1.) The Fall: That is a body of work. The only one of these bands that is still making good records.
2.) Gang Of Four: Entertainment! is a motherfucker of a record. I would not usually give a band such high marks based on one great record, but holy shit, that's a fucking record right there.
3.) Joy Division: Do not inspire as fevered a reaction as the Fall or GO4 do to my brain, but close. A small handful of really good records with very little bullshit counts for something.
4.) Wire: Pink Flag is a holy shit! record just like Entertainment!. Next two are both excellent for the most part, but also occasionally boring. And then several bullshit records. Not a good batting average on the whole.
5.) PiL: John Lydon is a cock. Also, this band is not as consistent as they get credit for. Even Metal Box has a few clunkers. Out of all these bands that have released bullshit, PiL's bullshit is probably the worst.

Done. You're welcome.

Edit: Woops -- adding a poll option cleared the vote results. Y'all are gonna have to re-vote. And pretend this is now a 6-Way Dome.

Can there be any further debate? No, there cannot. And thank YOU, Into the Void, for clarifying matters for us all.
