Either/Or: Chrome vs. Wipers

Postby DregsInTheCrowd on Sat Nov 20, 2010 1:51 pm

I was craving a non-Beatles poll.

Two swell bands with uniquely talented guitarists and rhythm sections, homespun effects and loops, hazy recording, and weird paranoid imagery. Both released many great albums in roughly the same time period.

I'm with Ace. I like Chrome, but love Wipers! One of the best bands this board has introduced me to.

Excellent thunderdome, but it's easily the Wipers for me.

Chrome - a ton bands bands can rip off the Wipers effectively, I have yet to hear a good Chrome rip off.

CHROME.

No contest.

Wipers are great, however.

I can't believe anyone thinks this is even a contest. Wipers.

Having said that, I only have the first two Chrome records and am open, but still.

Chrome.

More paranoid, more aggressive, more inventive, druggier, groovier, more apocalyptic. The Wipers were a great band for a spell, and perhaps a lot more sincere. But Chrome combined excellent rock'n'roll w/gobs of previously uncharted insanity, whereas I mostly only hear the former w/the Wipers.

That said, Damon AND Helios' Doug Yule-style versions of Chrome kinda suck. But then again, so does Greg Sage's production work for Beat Happening and his music on some of those later Wipers LPs.

As for what they've wrought, I guess the Wipers inspired a lot of bland, watered-down indie guitar rock whereas Chrome bred gothy, sci-fi industrial stupidity. But plenty of cool bands took cues from both groups, as well. And there are some fantastic psych-punk guitar solos in both bands' catalogs.

Wow... this was tougher than I thought. I guess it comes down to acid vs. weed. (I should mention that I don't take drugs, unless you count alcohol and caffeine.)

I listen to the Wipers more but when I first heard Chrome I was blown away, one of those genuine moments of excitement at hearing some sound.

Chrome is great, but isn't exactly the type of music that gets someone through high school or something.

Wipers all the way.

Wouldn't go that far, sir. I recall many freezing November mornings walking to the bus and listening to "Chromosome Damage", "March of the Chrome Police" and "You've Been Duplicated" and wanting nothing more than to be in my basement jamming with my friends and making various 4 track demos.

Chrome has always done that for me, even if there was no way I was gonna achieve certain guitar techniques or that drum sound on my 4 track. They just influence me to play loud music with my friends in a way that the Ramones or the Electric Eels would, simple as that. That sure helped me get through high school. Probably not in the way you meant it, but it sure gave me something to listen to and look forward to. Man, Half Machine Lip Moves was a great discovery.

Now comparing Wipers to Chrome and feeling confident in my answer? I'll have to wait a bit on that one. This is a good poll.

Wipers easily. The tones, the vibe, the songs. I like chrome a lot and I recognize their importance, but Greg and the wipers are in my personal top 10.

Chrome means more to me. They got their hooks into me early, and are now part of my genetic blueprint. I mean, their best stuff genuinely does not sound like the work of human beings. I may have chromosome damage, but Helios and Damon get my vote.
