I just wanted to get this Big Star thread up here, even if it's just for a little bit. I am full of love for Public Enemy and the Velvets, with those other topics knocking around. And I love Big Star so much.

So much!!

It would fill me with happiness for everyone to talk with joy about their favourite Big Star album. But if it is not to be, then at least I gave them a shot at the top of C/NC, just for one day.

I'm listening to Radio City right now. There are so many great songs on this one, Life is White, You Get What You Deserve, She's a Mover, September Gurls, I'm in Love With a Girl. Not Crap.

Radio City is my fav. But i loves me some First as well.

Never been too big a fan of Chris Bell, but he sure did write some great stoned rockers.

How is the new one? It seems weird that it is a "Big Star" record...

I don't know. It totally slipped under my radar, which is weird since I'd been looking forward to it.

Radio City was the one that took the longest to click with me. Third was pretty instant, as was #1 Record (which is their weakest album - not including the new one, which I haven't heard yet). But for a long time now I have thought Radio City as their masterpiece. On that album, I believe, is a band the equal of any great rock band in history. Distinctive, unique and inimitable.

Great songs, great drumming. I find myself listening to their records way more than say Cheap Trick who in my opinion is most like them in my collection (no, I don't own any Teenage Fanclub...).

I am always surprized how much I DON'T like Alex Chilton outside of Big Star.

Apparently, there's a book that just came out on Big Star by Rob Jovanovic for Chicago Review Press. I'll have to check this out.

Holy Crap! Big Star! How I had loved them, and how I had almost completely forgotten them!

OK. Did anyone else here get into Big Star because of the Replacements' song "Alex Chilton"? Wow. That's gae and everything, but I was 14 or so. But yes, that's how it happened. Strange to discover this band you've never heard of, who were making songs so long ago and were so good (and then add in the weirdness of Alex Chilton being the familiar voice on "The Letter", which is a real Oldies hit).

I have not listened to these records in over a decade, but I think I will do so now. I can hear "September Girls" in my head (sidenote: same structure as Paul Stanley's "It's Alright" from his solo album, 1978).

I have a strong, longstanding personal connection w/the beauty and perversity found in many of the songs Alex Chilton wrote and performed with Big Star, particularly as found on "Radio City" and "Sister Lovers."

I have no interest whatsoever in their continued existence.

Big Star is NOT CRAP. Linkin Park is CRAP. There is a gigantic difference. Why has no one started a "White Stripes: CRAP OR NOT CRAP" thread, or would that be too much like shooting fish in a barrel?

I have not heard anything produced under the Big Star name that I don't like. Certain songs by the Velvet Underground or Sonic Youth raise more of a negative reaction in me, like "turn that CRAP down" or "why are you listening to that CRAP?" I've never said that about Big Star, nope.

I had a re-visit on this last night and I bought the 4 Men With Beards Reissue of "3rd." Big Star gets a definite NOT CRAP in my book.

Question though...why do some folks shit on Big Star but then dig Cheap Trick so much?

The production on RADIO CITY was done, I believe, by Jim Dickinson, who worked on many of the old Stax/Volt records from the '60's. It is stellar. The drums and guitar sound so crisp and cutting.

I've never been too fond of the first record, but RADIO CITY is pure genius. I defy anyone to name a better pop rock band. Pavement? No. Cheap Trick? Not quite. The Replacements? Maybe in their best moments.
