HARVEY MILK vs. MELVINS

Seems like this should have been done already.

I love the Melvins, but boy have they put out some embarrassingly bad shit.

HM!

This is one of those contests that only make sense inside this place. I can't vote yet, only having assimilated The Pleaser (which I like) of Harvey Milk's catalog. I've been trying for a while to understand what rubs the people in this forum wrong about the Melvins, though. Listening to an album like Bullhead makes it very hard for me to believe it's just the music.

I better see some really fucking good examples of Harvey Milk to understand why they would even make it into a Thunderdome against the Melvins, let alone get any votes.

They're a good band and all, but they don't do it to me the same way they do it for others.
However, I mistakenly cast my vote to them, so I guess it's the Melvins.

I find these two to be very different from each other. They share many similarities sonically, but each band evokes a different feeling for me when I listen to them and it's difficult for me to compare them objectively.

But, The Melvins.

I am really surprised. I was thinking that Harvey Milk would take the cake here.

I mean, and again I love the Melvins, but My Love... shits all over the entire Melvins discography in my book.

This is fucked up.

The Melvins have a wealth of material, some of it mediocre, much of it awesome, and are trying to please no-one but themselves, which is what a band should be doing. Some folks can't get behind the non-rock material (Honky, Prick, 2nd half of Stag) and I have seen many a lunkhead get upset at 12 minute drumstick destroying crash cymbal solos. But when the Melvins rock, few bands can match them. They remain in my heart the only purveyors of Maximum Heaviosity.

Harvey Milk, fewer albums and a higher cream:crud ratio. Also, unpretentious, smart and funny dudes who are also making music for themselves, leaving the rest of us lucky indeed.
Special Wishes is one of my favorite records of the last 10 years.

I cannot vote.

Both bands are incredible, but my vote goes to the Melvins without hesitation.

Milk.

I can probably explain why, but it would be a long post.

I suppose the short version is that I find the Melvins predilection with being obtuse somewhat forced and grating, whereas the more 'difficult' parts of Harvey Milk seem to be produced in the belief that those parts are good and musically worthwhile despite being difficult, and not included solely for the purpose of being funny or irritating. That said, I also think HM has a better sense of humour.
Don't shun it. Fun it.
