ha, I might be a little depressed, but I think it has more to do with leaving Austin and coming back to my terrible hometown. I'm still pretty euphoric about the show. 'Bout to go play some ridiculously sustained shit through my bass stack.

I would just like to point out that: although I cannot attend the prf bbq this year, I am currently standing around in a dingy 200 or so person punk club, which in 20 minutes will be rocked by Matt, Al and Bomberz. Suck it haters.

Seeing them on Friday! For the second time!

If you'd told me, say, two years ago that I'd have seen Sleep twice in less than a year, I don't think I'd even be able to conceive how it was possible. Life is rad.

That was badass.

To be fair, it was ridiculously crowded and sweaty... and they even tripped a breaker. Amazingly Al and Matt's amps were enough for the room, but the second Jason plugged in a fan... halfway through, BOOM, there goes the power. Bummer! But only a slight hiccup.

It was $9, obviously a bargain. I think everybody was too sweaty to take any video... they also played in the dark for about 1/3 of the time to mitigate the insane heat. All I had was my dopey camera on my phone, so I didn't even try to take any pictures of the dudes playing... I was just sort of feeling the monolith of sound and swaying with the rest of the folks.

I did take a couple "before" pictures of the stage though.

For non-Bay area people who know it, Eli's is about the size of Quencher's.

It's essentially at MLK and MacArthur in Oakland.

yup, a stone's throw away from MacArthur BART.
Basically what scared white people from the suburbs think of when they think of Oakland.
Used to be a crazy popular place for the blues... not like... Blueshammer, but authentic blues dudes. They had a bunch of shows in the mid 2000s, before you lived in the bay area Evin... Ben and I played there a couple times. It's now totally a punk club, hell you can even go get tattoos upstairs!

Solid not crap, but I find them a bit overrated. I never really got the huge praise for this band. They certainly aren't in the same league as Electric Wizard. I couldn't even finish Jerusalem.
Is it because I haven't seen them live?

Wow this is not far from where I used to live. I think I saw a show here once, or was that the "swan" dive?

BTW Conan I keep trying to come get my stuff but I picked up an internship. Next couple weeks or so I hope!

They were fucking RIDICULOUS live yesterday. Just 100% holy shit ridiculous, as in jaw-on-floor "this is the loudest thing I've ever witnessed" insuperably awesome. The Wiltern came alive something fierce.

I agree that Dopesmoker / Jerusalem can be kind of a "chore" if you're not in a very specific mood or if you're just not inclined to it, and I often spin "Dopethrone" in a fashion that may have you wondering if I use it as some kind of energy supplement or something, but after witnessing a collapsing waste of a show by the "classic" Electric Wizard lineup and contrasting it with last night's textured, orchestrated, epic onslaught (and yes I mean EPIC in the classical sense) I will have to give it to Sleep.

The guitar sounded like space-time itself was collapsing into torn shreds of fabric. The bass was bowel-shredding in its depth. The drums were masterfully done, and even though he had some tech problems he just drove right through them with a lot more subtlety than most "hawd rawk!" dudes could muster. I felt warm and happy throughout the show, just floating through the whole thing with a sense of childlike fascination.

Started off TRIPLE LOUD, ended TRIPLE-QUADRUPLE LOUD. When I went to piss I could have sworn that a new universe was being created in the next room.

I don't like big shows. I don't like big venues. I don't like hordes of people. But last night man... great show.

Salut, Sleep!

They really are.

Saw them on Friday, Matt Pike was wearing a shirt, which kind of confused me, but I guess it was an outdoor show in the rain so. Also there were people moshing. What kind of fucktard moshes at a Sleep show? Chill out, you cocks. Still a mindblowing show, Roeder's a perfect fit for the band.
