First listen to Exmilitary now and it's fucking AWESOME. Their samples are the best I've heard in a long time, not as obscure/hard to recognise as I'm used to, but it sounds fucking awesome. Rumble is already the most badass song of all time, and they just took it up a notch.

NOT CRAP.

I've watched this "Guillotine" video three times in a row.

That NeedleDrops dork did a review for 'Exmilitary,' and I gotta say it's pretty dead-on as to what I think of the group. Not for everyone, but I love it. I'm gonna go see them tomorrow night; should be rad.

Awesome! How was it?

by the way, I watch that NeedleDrop guy's reviews too! he's often dead-on about what I think of some albums, although completely off on others (Iceage - New Brigade, for example)...

fucking insane! Sound was a little muddy, but their energy blew everyone away. Zach improvised over the entire set with the face melting Hella style he's notorious for. It wasn't overbearing at all, somehow. Really interesting in the context of Death Grips and amazing to watch; he really is a bottomless pit of ideas. You could tell the rapper himself (does anyone know his name?) was loving the shit out of every second. he has a derranged, absolutely fearless presence that got the crowd super hyped. So much fun; they put on a great show.

Also I would be interested in reading a C/Nc about theneedledrop guy.

Definitely interesting, first rap I've been interested in in years. "Interstellar Overdrive" sampled in a rap song, weird...

Interesting. Not sure I want to go get the records but not crap.

For the record, the weird provenance of their samples is dead last in the list of reasons why I think these guys are awesome.

Which, might I add, makes this the best project he's been attached to by a long shot. I want to know more about the guy rapping, why his voice is insane, and why we haven't heard of him prior.

If no one ever told you Zach Hill was on this record you would never know, which is a good thing. I wonder what he actually contributed to it.

It's not that the samples are "odd" per se, it's that they work with the jungle/garage/grime-esque music and vocal delivery.

Shows how much I know about the above genres.

I like some of what I've heard. The vocals are mixed like a rock record; they're cool, but they are just another sonic element, not the whole fuckin' show like so much rap*. That song with the Rumble sample is pretty badass.

*I'm about as non-hip hop as they come..

On my first listen of Exmilitary.

I have had the following thoughts:

1.)If Godflesh started out as a rap group, they would have made something like this instead of Streetcleaner.

2.)Before I had actually heard Odd Future, I had this idealized version of what they would sound like, which of course they didn't come close to. Death Grips are a lot closer to what I was hoping Odd Future would have sounded like. The "raw," "anger," and "punk" signifiers actually make a whole hell of a lot more sense here.

Not that they sound anything alike, but Death Grips is the Daniel Higgs of rap.
