I got excited that they are playing Newcastle in December. Then I found a site that was saying the tickets cost £60. Fuck that noise.

EDIT: Just looked on ticketmaster and tickets are £13. I'm excited again.

Listening to my LP of Seamonsters on the new stereo setup I picked up a few days ago.

Damn, this record has never sounded better. I mean, it's an amazing sounding record, but the setup I've got it going through just makes it sound that much better. The mid-song dynamic jump in "Dalliance" just destroys.

It's pretty rad anyone can make a record with Steve still, and you know it'll sound this good.

Was he wearing shortpants? Dude is like 60 and still goes for a kind of schoolboy/footballer look. Weird.

I remain a big fan of his music though.

Aside from hearing "Dan Dare" that night (it wasn't played) catching a sight of Gedge's gams would have been the second biggest thrill, 'cause I'm a big queer. Alas, this wasn't to be. Dude was dressed appropriately for a man of his station in life.

Still doesn't mean that I didn't try to lure him into the photobooth for a snog. It's fucking David Gedge.

Didn't like the Wedding Present when they were first on the scene, found them too twee and going the opposite direction to what I was. Now I'm older, I find I like them. But the Ukrainians are better still, they have loads of great tunes (although most of them are ripped off traditional Eastern European folk songs). Slava is a great track.

Question: Do you have to really be on either end of a break up to truly get into the Wedding Present? Because they're starting to sound absolutely incredible to me right now.

It helps.

I got into them after a breakup and am wearing out their records again now.

To many (especially here on the PRF) the 'Golden Era' would be '89-'92 approx, so Bizarro, Seamonsters, Hit Parade 1&2.

After they made Bizarro they re-recorded one of the album tracks plus 3 other songs with Steve, resulting in the excellent Brassneck ep. The other tracks on that are ace. Gedge said then that he wished they'd have done the whole of Bizarro with Steve.

They then employed Steve for Seamonsters and a slew of singles/b-sides stuff.

And then sorta used his methods/style (or so they said in interviews of the time) for recordings (none actually by Steve) of their 12 monthly singles releases, compiled later on HP 1&2.

I think Brian Paulson did most of the stuff on Hit Parade. All that sounds awesome!

The last album (prior to the one coming out this month), El Rey, was also recorded with Steve. It certainly has it's moments, although I find some of the lyrics cringeworthy. I wish there had been a little more editing of tracks on both this and Take Fountain, but all-in-all John Peel's summation remains very true, “The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the 'Rock 'n' Roll' era. You may dispute this, but I'm right and you're wrong!”

I'm excited to see them next month on the Seamonsters tour, it may be shameless nostalgia but color me nostalgic!

There isn't a dud on the new one Valentina. Better than the last one. The old drummer is the new guitarist and there's some Bizarro rocking here and there. It's mostly downbeat but the mix is stark and less glossy than the last few records. A few very noisy tracks which work really well with this line-up. If you passed over it, give it a spin. I was pleasantly surprised.

There is also a CD of recordings of all the 12 original tracks (A sides) from Hit Parade culled from BBC Radio Sessions. It originally came with the CD version of HP2 and may be limited edition (although I could be wrong on that). The tracks are more immediate and "live" sounding than the released versions.

Yes, I do have a copy.
