Really hoping they play at least a few North American shows in 2012.

Bizarrely they're playing Bristol before any of their UK dates. One of our best venues (the Fleece) managed to get 'em. Would rather go to the Bitch Magnet + Hot Snakes gig in London but whatever.

I don't like them that much though, these Bitch Magnet fellows, but I think they'll be pretty great to see live. There are moments of absolute brilliance in their records (Navajo Ace is about as outstanding as over-thought jerky post-hardcore musc can go) but then there are moments where they sound like standard 80s dumb hair metal or something (Motor), which is not helped by the excessively pointlessly flamboyant guitar playing.

Most of Star Booty works incredibly well despite the muffled production. I kind of struggle to get through Umber in one sitting. Haven't heard the third record.

I'll give them a not crap because there are more moments I enjoy than hate, but heavy waffles.

Bill, first track on Ben Hur (Dragoon, I think) is fantastic. Their best moment for me.

A pleasure, sir. I saw them in 1990 / 1991 and am very excited to be seeing them 20 years on at the Lexington.

Indeed. It's like a more rocked-up, vocal-driven take on what Gore was doing circa Wrede--The Cruel Peace. But from an American post-hardcore perspective rather than a European art-metal one.

I seriously think you should give Umber (and maybe half of Ben Hur) another chance. Really inspiring music.

The reissue (CD version, anyway) sounds phenomenal. Noticing all kindsa shit I never heard before, and that's from someone who borderline studied these records in high school. Umber, specifically, has about a jillion interesting guitar overdubs and flourishes. The original LP was more of a wash-y wall, but here you can really pick it apart.

The sound on Star Booty is much improved, too, although it's still pretty awkward (that damn drum miking).

The previously unreleased session (between Star Booty and Umber) is quite good. Better than the former, not quite on par w/the latter. Killer version of "Sadie." And also boasting a bizarre, but less offensive drum sound. There's also a no-big-deal alternate mix of "Motor" featuring way more of Dave Galt's "race car" guitar plus extra kick drum.

Xmas is just around the corner. Gift Magnet.

I concur regarding the reissues. They are multiple forms of awesome - even Star Booty is improved - but LOUD. The new 5-track session is really great and Orestes sounds absolutely massive.

Have not heard the vinyl so can't speak for that.

They rocked ATP Saturday, and indeed in the reason I was even there was because they're the nicest guys in the world. They cancelled their Bristol gig and because I whined like a little girl to them on Twitter they gave me two guest passes for me and my friend!

Awesome.

They were great at the Lexington too. So glad I got a chance to hear those songs live again.

Support bands were godawful though... what's up with NEW bands thinking it's a good idea to sound like a useless support band from 1987?

Was fortunate enough to catch these guys in Singapore.

(i) They are wonderful human beings, and willingly gave their time to all-comers
(ii) They are the most underrated rock band ever........EVER!
(iii) Orestes Morefin challenges for the worlds greatest rock drummer
(iv) If they are in your neighbourhood, it would be foolish to miss them, as they gave indications they may not do this again.

I had always loved the Ben Hur Lp but found the other stuff okay but flat. Wow, the remasters changed all that!

In an age during which the very words "deluxe reissue" start me pulling pins on imaginary grenades, these fellows and the craftsmen working with them did things fucking CORRECT. (Same should be said of the Jesus Lizard RMs. It's really cool that Ritchie Blackmore took the time to work on those. I didn't even know he was a master-er until then!)

And can we get at least 1 gig, somewhere in the USA, featuring Bitch Magnet and Codeine? Or Bitch Magnet/Codeine/Grubbs? That would be the thing...

Re: Band: Bitch Magnet.

How is it that I have never written a full screed on this fantastic band?

I can't remember which one of my friends discovered Star Booty but it was directly after the first wave of getting into Big Black, Husker Du, Scratch Acid, the first couple Lemonheads records, Butthole Surfers, Minutemen etc.

I played the shit out of this record. Eight songs, so short, so infinitely repeatable.

The production never bugged me because there was no other output to measure it against, and you could tell it was LOUD, so much louder than some of the other music I enjoyed. I still hear the opening bass riff to "Carnation" clear as a bell, and then the feedback and then the drum fill into the song launching off, it is a clear and resounding recall that goes through my head regularly to this day, top five favorite starts to a record.

There certainly was a smartness to the music that I hadn't particularly keyed into before. My high school band was pretty verse/chorus/verse, without many additional flourishes. But for basic rock music, nothing was articulated as smartly as Bitch Magnet in my head at the time, especially given the magnificent propulsive architecture of the drums, which really set this little record apart, and helped (along with Bastro's Rode Hard And Put Up Wet to secure me on the road away from a majority of more "standard" music.

The following year firmly cemented me in this camp with the release of both Umber and Diablo Guapo. Both were revelations. The first time I heard Umber, I thought "Oh, right". The clarity of the recording was impressive, especially due to the amount of time I sunk into the EP. Edging right up against metal in sound signature, it existed in isolation to any other records (excepting the Bastro record, which pummels where Umber soars, not that either description doesn't cross-apply). It exists mostly in a flow of musical moods and movements in my head, not as a song-by-song album, but without a doubt the last 1-2 knockout punch of "Punch And Judy" into "Americruiser" perfectly encapsulate the edges of Bitch Magnet to me - the former utterly destroys, the latter, sublime and hints at the magnificence of "Dragoon".

Was slightly offput by the "Valmead b/w Pea" single, as it didn't hit quite as hard. However, when Ben Hur hit in full, it hit quite solidly, defining what little space was left for Bitch Magnet. "Dragoon" awoke what Spiderland would develop, Tortoise & Gastr del Sol would massage, and what Earth and Jerusalem / Dopesmoker would come to define.

And that this band could also produce "Mesentary", one of my top ten favorite songs on an album that was a direct line from the leap of Umber but somehow containing more brutal looks, more simple beauty.

Appropriate that they stopped. I don't know if they could have done much more without folding back upon themselves. I enjoyed the first three Seam releases (and the shows, particularly the brief minute when Bundy Brown and John McEntire were the rhythm section) and it was great to get more Jon Fine in Vineland and more Orestes on those two Walt Mink records.

But holy crap I still cannot believe that I get to see this music played live in a short period of time.
