Once you've absorbed that one, Libertine-Firewater-Developer is one of the best runs of albums I can think of. I'm jealous because I wish I could hear them again for the first time, in that order.

Wow! It seems funny to me that someone on this board only has one Silkworm record. It seems like all of us have all of them, and that's half the reason why we're on the PRF in the first place.

But maybe that's just me.

So many records to buy, so little time. I'll acquire more Silkworm in the near future.

Me too. Discovering the records in chronological order (including Joel's stuff) would be a treat.

Bought my first Silkworm album, Lifestyle, yesterday. Kicking my ass. The cover of Oh La La came on and I started to groan, like, "please do not do this, things are going so well," and I'll be damned if it hasn't kicked my ass even more. Please leave the used copies at Reckless alone so that I can pick them up this week.
I count to prime numbers and strum tonal clusters with Radiant Republic.

Bass in the Heavy Bombers We're on the PRF Singles Comp Q1.

Sax with Begin By Gathering Supplies.

I don't know what I did in Loex.

Ptommydski wrote:Yeah I think we've discussed this phenomena before. I like the way people get kind of pissed off the first couple of times they hear Silkworm. This isn't right, I don't like XYZ etc. Then a few weeks down the line it's all they listen to. It's kind of viral in that sense, which makes me think that one day they will be regarded as a great band on a wider level.

Yeah, this describes my experience perfectly.

"That guy can't sing! Wait, they're all singing? Okay, none of them can sing."

"The bass sounds stupid, why is it being played like that, stupid."

I mean really, Lifestyle pissed me off so much. Obviously I love it now.

Raging Bull was what unlocked them for me.

Guys, listen to this live version of "Raised By Tigers."

Wait until you hear the second verse. I am floored by it.

My search skills fucking blow apparently. I can't even find Neu! on here. Tried typing it every which way and still nothing, but anyways....

Silkworm. They get a huge amount of respect around here so I bought the record Italian Platinum. I listened to it over and over in any which way. I didn't even have the PRF worship of them in mind, I just treated it like every other record I've ever bought and listened to.

I don't get it. It's good and I have zero bad things to say about the album or the band in general (Tim is a very funny, smart dude and I enjoy when he posts), but it just hasn't clicked with me. I've been trying to listen to other material too, but still the same results.

Personally I like Bottomless Pit more. Some of those songs come out of nowhere and into my head at the weirdest times.

I wouldn't dare vote crap, but I feel like I'm missing something big here due to all the hype they SKWM receives.

Anthony, give It'll Be Cool a shot and see if you dig it. That was my intro and probably still favorite record by the mighty Silkworm. Actually, sometimes it's Developer or Firewater that reigns as favorite, but it just depends on when you ask me.

Keep in mind Silkworm has a pretty large discography and Italian Platinum is near the end of it. Maybe you should try something earlier like In the West or Libertine and move forward from there. Their album In the West is easier to absorb, but as many people have found, the followup album (Libertine) really pays off with some additional listening and is often considered one of their finest. I didn't like it as much at first, but it has some of their best material on it, whether or not you realize it from the get go. For example, if you listen to "Grotto of Miracles" and don't feel moved, there might be something seriously fucked up with your ears. Seriously. You'd have to go to the best ear doctor around and pray for miracle surgery if that wasn't apparent. There's just no way you can't be moved by it.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll be tracking down the records you listed within the month.

I reckon Firewater would be the one for you, Anthony. If *you* don't like that then I'd be pretty surprised.

I remember some guy on a forum describing Andy Cohen's guitar playing as the sweet spot between Crazy Horse and Robert Quine. Made me think of a tennis racket.

Man, such a rockin' good band. I need to get around to having some kind of marathon instead of like, having "Wet Firecracker" on repeat.

I certainly love fire water, so let's hope the album is just as good!
