John Grabski III memorial page

Postby steve on Sat Apr 28, 2012 3:20 pm

Hey, we've put up a John Grabski Memorial page, with permission from his family. It's here, but I'd like to add to it. Suggestions for what to add to the page, specifically links to other pages or memorials. I don't want it to be a clutter, but if there are other things to add, post them here.

I like that picture of John: http://www.mpnnow.com/canandaigua/x2487 ... wins?img=2

A drum and a hat and sunglasses. Awesome!

As I person who is extremely scared of death, I had a hard time reading this really deep piece. I'll probably have a bad dream tonight.

I wrote a couple of things about Teeth on my website. They seem sort of silly in the face of such a terrific tribute but I'll link them in this thread for posterity -

Review: Teeth - The Strain
Remembering John Grabski III 1978-2012

We miss you John.

Tommy, I'm sure you mean well (in fact I know you do), and I don't want this page to turn into some deep heated discussion about the topic, but this comes off as a bit disrespectful to me, y'know?

There's nothing disrespectful about it....It's just adding to the discussion. Let's drop it.

There's something good about seeing someone go down with his eyes open. I know exactly what Steve means when he says John helped show him how to do it. I feel the same way about a couple of other people I knew. They were scared sometimes, and it hurt, but they didn't let it eat them up. They just rode the shit out as part of life.

Thank you, Steve! You made me stop for 10 minutes and read and think. The thoughts you (and John) provoked will last far beyond those 10 minutes.

I'll happily remove it if you like. Maybe I've misunderstood the purpose of the thread but I thought this bit was asking for people to post their tributes -

I definitely don't want it added to that page, I think it's absolutely perfect as it is and agree that it should be kept as clutter free as possible. However, it seems innocent enough in this thread, if it's to be used as a memorial.

I'm legitimately sorry if I offended anybody by misinterpreting the initial post.

I thought he meant the page he'd posted when he mentioned suggestions for links other tributes and stuff. Yeah I may have misread that one, my bad.

Nevermind!

(Both tributes are a great read btw.)

The conclusion of Steve's essay is why I never failed to smile when reading John's updates. The fact that we have The Strain -- and that it is so good -- is important. It is less important than knowing John kept at it when his time was short. Even if he finished the second album, there would have been a third, or fourth, or some related project not yet complete, because that is how John was wired. I hope the same will be said of me when I am gone.

A very touching tribute. I enjoyed reading it and thinking about John. Though I didn't know him I find his life an inspiration.

One small correction: in paragraph eight, I believe "John hand met online" was intended to read "John had met online".

Thanks, I enjoyed reading this remembrance of John's life and his intention 'to live his life as though he was not dying', something that isn't always possible at the best of times. It was the first tribute I've ever read that left me hungry.
