Pg. 99. Those guys. I like them.
That said, during a break up I had to pack up all my stuff but left out my Pg. 99 CD, since that was on heavy rotation at the time. Figured it would take me a week to find a place and move out. Took me a month. One month. One CD. Took me a long time before I could listen to it again primarily because of the accidental self-inflicted over-saturation. I think the first record I listened to after I moved into my new place was Double Nickles on the Dime, just to rinse my brain out with something different for a minute. Or maybe it was Two Nuns and a Pack Mule.

I used to be way into the Gravity Records / screamo period Ebullition / early 31G and GSL / Troubleman stuff that fell into this genre. That said, when I sold off half of my record collection a couple years ago, most of this stuff didn't make the cut. There were a lot of, "screamo," bands and most of them sucked. The stuff that made the cut was the earlier stuff on Gravity / 31G / GSL mostly.

If nothing else this scene birthed the VSS which makes it completely worthwhile. They were one of my favorite bands of all time. Nervous Circuits is a tremendous record.

Also, In/Humanity is awesome. Chris Bickel has been in a lot of other great bands too worth checking out. (Guyana Punchline, Confederate Fagg)

If youre in toronto and like this sort of stuff (or post metal, weird post punk and post hardcore) then definitely go to this. Capacities, veners, animal faces, alaskan, mahria, foxmoulder and i spoke are all excellent. I dont know the other but I doubt they'll be anything less than good.

i read this whole post, but somehow totally missed the in/humanity recommendation. coincidentally, right around the time you had posted this, i met a dude in ann arbor who showed me these guys. got Violent Resignation - the Great American Teenage Suicide Rebellion; it's kinda spotty for me, but the good stuff is great.

i want to say:

the reason i like "emo-violence" and "screamo" usually has more to do with the vocals than anything. i love both grind and powerviolence. like, assück were incredible. the vocals, though, to me, aren't. there are a few exceptions to this rule, of course. jon chang is my favorite vocalist of all time, probably, for example.

a chaotic powerviolence group fronted by a person who isn't trying to be some kind of fucking tough guy. existentially-oriented lyrics rather than political. this is the ideal.

Its seriously the dumbest name ever. Stuff like foxmoulder.bandcamp.com and http://capacitiesnj.bandcamp.com/ get labelled as it. I'm not really sure where it diverges from screamo or whatever. Its one of the most hair splitting genre distinctions outside of electronic music I think.

Another one of those sub-subgenres I may have listened to a bit at the time (Kill Sadie, Universal Order of Armageddon, Heroin, etc.) but hasn't held up well at all. It seems like those bands were trying to fit into some made up HeartAttack zine mold and were all aping the same 3 bands over and over: 'snake eating its tail' syndrome. I think this is what can happen to music when it gets too underground..

Crap.

this is a bigger issue in larger cities, where theres enough bands of a single genre to do gigs only together. Where I live, theres so little of everyting people need to do gigs together even if theyre not playing with bands who play music thats really their thing (barring bands that are actually shit, atleast)

From my end, that was an advantage. When I was in the most popular 'metalcore' band in town (when there were maybe 3), we would get on every 'metal____' bill that came through. It may have made us seem a little more important than we actually were. We were playing shows with bands like Cave-in, Isis, and Coalesce (and a bunch more that I forgot or am too embarrassed to mention.. stuff like Brothers Keeper and Earth Crisis..)

Soon as I started touring with them and playing on fuckin' 5 band '____core' bills every night that I realized these sub-scenes were a bunch of bullshit. Every city has 30 kids that listen to and read the same crap. When they go and start their own bands, guess what they sound and look like? At that point I decided I was happier buying old Cheap Trick records than keeping up with the latest bands with photocopied 7"s.

i have no interest or knowledge regarding this thing whatsoever. anything which has screaming as part of its central aesthetic seems a little silly and can't be very relaxing for the listener unless they are mentally ill or a fool.

It certainly makes me feel rather carthartic towards the proprietors of this trash's personal well being.

Screamo band from chicago. Saw them in toronto. theyre decent, schizophrenic drummer. they write songs about skyrim and a song of ice and fire. their bassist is reallyreally cute.

"Screamo" was not a "thing" in the 1990s, not that I remember anyway.
