I smell a strawman!
Dude, if Tar ran a $1.2 million Kickstarter and then asked a bunch of people to just show up and be semi-professional and accompany them orchestra-style, i'm pretty sure most people here would cock their eyes and be all "WTF?"

Jesus, this is the Space Ace by Don Bluth of internet intrigue.

So this is about her having the money but choosing to pay musicians in beer & merch, and not so much about musicians being willing to play a gig for little or no compensation. Yeah, I get that. This is the pkids-list era Joe Lemur who blurts things out without thinking it all the way through first, talking.
So I guess if she didn't have a million bucks it wouldn't be so much of a problem, correct?
Though I bet if FNM asked you to sit behind Puffy's kit for a few numbers for just a backstage pass, you'd be on that in a hot second

Neil Gaiman (who I am equally ambivalent about) and Amanda Palmer also made a questionable Kickstarter to fund a mini-tour of the west coast of America. They asked for $20,000 and the total sum raised was $133,342. I'm pretty sure that these people are both pretty wealthy but again, I suppose it shows how daft/generous/gullible their fans are.
