Yeah. That is that bad. That is terrible. When I was working fulltime (30-35 h a week) on my second job I made enough to live on my own with one or two roommates with enough left over afterwords to eat real food or save for instruments. Come to newfoundland.

Oh, I make more than enough. It's not like I'm barely surviving. I make around $20 an hour on straight time, anything past 8 is time and a half, Saturday is time and a half, Sunday is double. The hours kind of suck, but I am doing my best to save as much as I can as fast as I can (and make equipment purchases and invest in my cars), so I don't mind it quite as much as I could. I'm sure I can figure out the social quagmire somehow. The only thing that bothers me about it is I sometimes feel like I'm throwing away the end of my twenties, during which I haven't accomplished much socially anyway, for the sake of ensuring steady finances. I dunno. Fuck it.

Very true. She has the funds to give back to the members of her fan base that are willing to commit some time to help her out, and it's weird that she won't. Creepy, even.

To me, though, this is an issue of the internet distorting communication. All those furious comments on her blog post from professional musicians who can't believe she would ask for something for free are missing something: she isn't talking to them. They only know to complain because it went viral.

If someone posted on this board saying their band was coming through town and they wanted to find a guitarist for every show to come up and play 2 songs, it would happen. This is like that, only in a horrible bizarro world way where the music is embarrassingly bad and there's lavender-scented soap in the backstage dispensers. Oh - and if any of us did that and had that much money sitting around we'd pay the people helping us out. But the point is, she posted on her blog, assuming she was communicating just to her community, it went viral, and all sorts of people assumed she was asking them to play for free.

So: douche move for being such a tightwad and for creating such disgusting musical tripe, but not her fault that every fifth-tier viola stroker in america thinks she doesn't appreciate them.

True. In Glenn's case for the 13, there were recording expenses, feeding-the-band, and room buyout expenses, and some fundraising to offset those. I can't imagine any scenario in which the 13 would be able to generate a union-scale wage for 100 players.

Jandek events are smaller in scale, and appear more self-sufficient.
