Pretty much the ideal way to hear any music you'd want to hear sitting down.

There appears to be a TBA slot at 2:00 PM on the 19th. Small Awesome would be an ideal addition to the lineup. No one put me up to this, they'd just be perfect.

This makes me miss being in Chicago, but via the wonders of the intertubes, Glen Hansard Skyped into the Second City etc. stage and the performance streamed out to my computer.

Audience member just paid Jeff Tweedy $1000 to go outside the theater and sing a song to the fans that couldn't get in. Haha.

3 people each bid $30,000 for Tweedy to play in their living rooms, so they raised $90,000 off Jeff Tweedy alone to play 3 living room shows. Then another person offered to be a 4th at $28,000, so they dropped the other 3 down to $28,000 making the total $112,000.

Damn, son.

Just popping in to say Jeff Tweedy is a goddamn hero. He shoulders a pretty amazing commitment for this effort every goddamn year and then spends the rest of the year fulfilling it. Dude blows my mind and I love him for it.

For the non-Illinois/indie folks, Jeff's wife used to be part of the team that ran Lounge Ax. One night, I went to see Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils. By then, I'd talked to Jeff a few times. When I walked past, he said hello while he was talking to Dave from the Pulsars.

Later, he walked over to say he was sorry he didn't have a chance to say more to me earlier.

I also saw him politely work his way out of being asked if he was a Cubs or a Sox fan. I got the feeling he's a St. Louis fan.

Anyway, that is great work.

I was at this show for a few late hours last night and am now paying for it as I sit at my desk job, nursing a Giant Coke to wake up....

Highlights:

Michael Patrick O'Brien (7 minutes in Heaven dude) is a gifted improv performer, all-around good guy, and will hopefully get more SNL airtime to showcase his performance talents that accompany his significant writing chops....

Fred Armisen OWNED the room for his hilarious 1:30am set (special props to Heather for quickly disposing of that huge drunk dude that wobbily wandered on stage at one point)...

Kim Deal is amazing...

Facklis & Sudeikis & Wilde leading the entire audience out the door to do an LMFAO dance flash mob that shut down Wells & North @ 2:30am...

TJ Jagodowski the unflappable MC....

I'll remember more high points when I am more awake, but I'm sure there are others who were there and can chime in?

Steve's conversation with Nate Silver was fun, full of talk about politics, forecasting, baseball, poker, and burritos. Robbie Fulks is scheduled to go on in a few minutes.

Once again, this is one of the only ways outside of a house party or in-store to hear certain great musicians unamplified. Past years I've seen Tweedy, Robbie Fulks, Jason Molina, and John Darnielle play this way at Letters to Santa. This year, it was Will Oldham, harmonizing with Emmett Kelly, singing "There Is No God" and "Christmas Eve Can Kill You" surrounded by kids aged 3 to 7 years old at 7:15 in the morning.

And the improv...well, Chicago improv is as much of a guild as kabuki or cobblers, and these particular performers are as much the masters of their craft as anyone on Curb, SNL, or elsewhere on TV.

Super fun, more than usual even. The improv seemed really strong, from what I saw of it. I'm not a huge fan in general--it's just too hit or miss for me--but I found myself laughing a bunch. TJ and Pat are extremely great at it, so it helped to have them onstage almost the entire time.

Fred Schneider was great. All those decades of catty remarks. Encyclopedia of them.

I really like Kim Deal on her own. You can hear the whole band in there. All the bass playing and drums and stuff on the Breeders records, it's all there in the fringes of her guitar playing, which is way weirder and harder to figure than it seems at first blush. One of the great voices, of course. Just super charming and fun to watch.

Only other thing I saw was Steve and Nate Silver the next day. Nate Silver was personable and funny and seemed totally at ease. He correctly identified the best La Pasadita (furthest north on the west side of Ashland, of course).

Someone asked him what other fields he thought could use improved statistical modeling. Before he answered, he said he made a practice out of going for stuff where a B+ result would be a huge improvement--he'd give an A effort, but B+ would be more than good enough to succeed. I liked that personally, because I tell everybody the same thing when I'm asked about my career choices over the last ten years or so.

Anyway, it's one of the best things ever. I'm lucky to call people who would do this my friends.
