Yeah yeah looks cool.

My fave bikes are older BMW and Guzzis. I'm not into speed or whatever, just cruising along.

Wait, was that the one with the imploded motor? Extra awesome that you got it running. Congrats.

Yep. I bought a used block/cylinders/pistons from an '86 R80 on ebay and frankensteined one good motor out of all the usable parts. The transmission was still good, though the clutch had some broken pieces from the imploded motor. I rebuilt the carbs, changed all the fluids, modified the subframe and seat pan, put a lightweight LiFePO4 battery in it, all new gaskets, heads rebuilt (new valves, seats, guides, springs), and a bunch of other little stuff (wiring, rearsets, pinstriping). I farmed out the heads, painting, and seat upholstery, but everything else was done by myself in my garage.

I spent more than I originally planned, but I have exactly what I want now. I've got more into it than both of our cars are worth combined.

Here's what it looked like when I bought it, for reference:

I really wanted an R90-S for many years, and I finally thought I found one some 22+ years ago, one of the cool orange ones, it was in pieces and needed some work.

I went to the guy's house and it was definitely a project, but that's what I wanted since I didn't have the money to buy a nice one. I swiped my finger into the exhaust port and it came out coated with powdered metal. Then he told me it was only for sale for $400 in silver coins.

You're right. The most telling ones are the destroyed con-rod photos. The rod from the right piston twisted and snapped somehow, flipped around inside the crankcase and jammed itself into the left side of the engine right where the left cylinder attaches. You can see the internal half of it jammed into the cylinder hole.

Here's the rest of the photos:

Here's the horrible pinstriping job I had done first by a guy I found on craigslist. I made him give me a refund. This wasn't even the worst of it. Luckily it came off pretty easy with solvent.

In ended up doing it myself with some pinstriping masking tape and a can of dark gray from the hardware store:

Three of my friends have Bonnevilles. Really...REALLY nice bikes. One of them is the blacked out model. Gorgeous.

Got my M-class about a year ago, and almost got a used BMW, except someone beat me to it. Ended up with a 2003 T-100, like the one above except green and gold. (Packers colors, I realized too late, but nobody's given me shit about it yet.) Bonnevilles are indeed very nice.

Cool in theory, terrible in practice.

I probably put in a few thousand miles on scooters, minibikes, dirt bikes and motorcycles in general before I ever learned how to drive a car or truck. So they feel more natural to me I guess.

FS: race prepped 2007 Suzuki SV 650 $2200

Image

This has all the shit that needs to be done for track days - shock, bodywork, fork internals, rearsets, clip ons, full ti exhaust, 520 conversion etc. Titled in tennessee. PM for parts/mod list. Converting it back to a street bike would be sort of stupid. If there is a cheaper second generation, fully race prepped SV that isn't in milk crates or blown up, I haven't seen it. This bike can do a track day tomorrow.

Before: 2005 painted with a coat of shitty truck bed liner.

Image

After: Scraped and sanded. Gas tank dent filled in. Painted in the color scheme of a 1989. 3rd year of production.

Good lord, that thing must be fun to ride. I'm sure I'd scare the hell out of myself in no time on it. Nice looking bike.

Might have a line on a '97 BMW F650, an unplated '94 DR250 w/blown shock, or an unplated '99 TW200 you could borrow for a day if you make it out my way.

I'm looking to get an old Kawasaki or Honda cafe racer style bike soon.

It's been a few years since I've rode one. Any tips, suggestions, comments would be nice.

Oh man. Fun with a capital F. I had a 99 sv that I raced and that thing went through hell and back.

I wish I still did track days.
