Yesterday, it occurred to me that I had never knowingly heard Husker Du. Which is strange, as I know all about them, I'm not 16 and I'm very familiar with all related bands. I went to the store and picked up Zen Arcade and New Day Rising, knowing that these were their best albums.

Husker Du were a great band! So nice to discover them 'later' in life.

I didn't want to take up any more space in the sacred cows thread discussing Husker Du, so...

Husker Du are high in the running for my favorite band ever. I have listened to their albums obsessively since high my teens, and unlike many of my other high school favorites, their appeal hasn't diminished for me over the years. And yet, I understand not liking them. I should know, as I have played their music for dozens of friends almost since the moment I first heard them, and not a single person I know has ended up liking it. At least not enough to go and get an album. Oh well.

Sugar on the other hand, well, I've gotten many friends into Sugar. I love that band too, and a good number of Bob Mould albums (The Last Dog And Pony Show being my favorite). I even enjoy Grant Hart's solo work, though I don't think he's ever topped his new record, Hot Wax.
My name is Mike, and I play music in Stripper Deville.

I like these guys a whole lot still. Zen Arcade doesn't mean as much to me as it used to, but their earlier stuff gets better and better. As do a few songs off of New Day Rising. Fucking 'Terms of Psychic Warfare'! I cannot get you out of my head.

Pun somewhat unintended.

Not Crap.

Hahaha. A joke I've told to myself a million times. I love the vaguely The Mamas and the Papa's backing vocal thing that happens in this song. The Huskers rarely mined the '60s for inspiration more effectively.

Nöt Cräp. Are umlauts really that difficult to type?

First single's kinda ho-hum post-punk. The debut LP is an inhuman, exhilarating semi-hardcore blur (almost as good as the Meat Puppets debut). Everything Falls Apart, In a Free Land, and Metal Circus are just fucking great rock records. Zen Arcade is uneven but ok. The other albums each have a handful of excellent, roughed-up pop tunes but they start getting a little formulaic. Except for Warehouse, which is mostly nonsense.

Mould was a total master of the overfried distortion-plus-chorus guitar sound. See also: Geordie from Killing Joke, Live Skull's Tom Paine, Tippy from Man Sized Action, Andy Hawkins from Blind Idiot God, and a few others I'm probably forgetting. It's tough to rock this much-misunderstood and terribly abused pedal and not sound like some new-huevo wuss or '80s jazz-fusion dweeb (or hey, you could combine the two and join the Police). These men somehow overcame the odds.

Not crap. Seeing Husker Du in a small venue in 1983 felt like standing in a hurricane, or encountering something else at close range that is extremely powerful and potentially destructive.

Truth.

This is relevant to my interests. I fixate on guitar sounds without having Clue One about what exactly they "are" or how they are produced. Bob Mould's guitar sound = NC.

Bob and, I think, Grant went to one of the colleges I went to, several years before I attended. They were well remembered there by people who had a clue.
