I mostly know these guys from the cutout bin of my favorite record store.
Virtually nobody I know has ever even heard of them- if you have, I'd give you a "not crap" rating just for that.

I know of them. I think I may have one of their records. Are you talking about the band from Finland?

YAY YAY YAY YAY

Pylon is one of my favorite bands of all time. A great forgotten gem. I heard something about them doing a reunion show recently--after the fact of course.

they are currently doing a few shows. Their first reunion, around '88 until '91, they put out the album "chain", which wasn't terrible but not as inspired as the old stuff. I lived in Georgia then and got to see a bunch of shows, they were one of the best live bands I ever saw. I'd have to say you need to have seen them to be able to deem them non or crap. I obviously say "not crap".

Back in 1991, not long before Pylon called it quits the second time, my old band got to open for them when they played in Ann Arbor. Pylon were very cool people, and their show was superb. Their early records are great, too -- if you ever run across either Gyrate or Chomp, pick 'em up. The original lineup is back together again, and have been playing fairly regularly in Georgia ... I haven't seen 'em, but the reviews have been encouraging. Here's Pylon's website:

A belated thanks for the link to their website which I otherwise might not have stumbled across. A few years back there was next to nothing on Pylon on the net.

Anyway, awesome that you did a show with them. I'm guessing it was at the Blind Pig, right? I read somewhere that Randall Bewley or whoever the guitarist is has proudly professed not to know how to tune his guitar, and I was curious about this. Does he tune it in straigth fourths or what?

At anyrate thanks for the feedback.

I listened to them tonight. Not a perfect band, but far from Crap. They have moments of brilliance. Gyrate and most of Chomp are stellar albums. the !! 10" is also quite nice..

I like the bass guitar sound and approach, even if the guy went overboard on the poly chorus (what can you say, this was the late 70's and early 80's!?). He played the absolute minimum on most of the songs on the first few albums. I like this approach. Not to mention, he's obviously got the Gang of Four thing going on, but his tone and basslines add a nice industrial angularity.

The guitar playing reminds me of a cross between Andy Gill, Keith Levene and Link Wray, but even less technical and stripped down than any of those guys.

The drumming is good and frantic when it is fast, keeping up with just enough urgency to make it exciting.

Although the production is definitely 100% Athens, Georgia on the early stuff, there is certainly a clarity to it that other early 80's bands were lacking.

Some of the songs have great repetitive parts with tense atmosphere (check out the tunes Gravity, Danger, and Working is No Problem off Gyrate)

I sense a primitive blueprint for other minimal and repetitive rock to come later.

R.E.M. unfortunately slaughtered their song "Crazy" (12 string electroacoustic guitar= bad idea Peter Buck.)

"Cool" is a great tune
"Feast On My Heart" is kick ass.
"Italian Movie Theme" is a superb instrumental.
"Yo Yo" is either the worst song put to tape, or it is 100% brilliant in how it makes me hate it so much.

even "B-Complex" and "This-That" from the not so great album Chain are memorable. Any other college/indie band from 1988 with the production that Pylon had on Chain might suck 500% more than they did.

Not Crap.

I love Pylon. They are one of those bands you get the feeling that no matter how hard they tried....they could put out a Van Halen covers album or something and it would still totally sound like Pylon. "Cool" is probably my favourite song from them, just for the bass sound and the root notes it's playing over the guitar in the intro (you know what I'm talking about). I'm pretty excited over the re-release of Gyrate they're finally getting around to.

I found the 12" for Beep in a new used record store here in town...in the $1 bin, amongst the Glen Campbell and Boston LPs. Was very happy.

feast on my heart, this is probably my favorite.

i was at a pylon show once and someone yelled out "radio freebird!"

the band laughed, the crowd laughed. i still chuckle when i think about it. it was the guy's timing, man.

I own none of their albums, but have heard selections from them and liked them a whole lot.

Maybe I should start digging, perhaps at the next WFMU record fair.
I make this music.
I also make pictures that you can buy. Feel free to look at my records for sale.

Pylon's debut is finally being reissued on CD in October of 2007. Here is the silly press release to accompany the reissue:

In December of 1987, R.E.M. was chosen by Rolling Stone as "America's Best Rock And Roll Band." This title that was quickly dismissed by drummer Bill Berry. "We're not the best rock'n'roll band in America." Pylon, he declared, was much more deserving of the honor than his group. Yet, at the time, Pylon had been broken up for four years.

Such is the legacy of Pylon. Word of mouth and a relatively small but vital cache of music has kept the story of the fiercely independent and highly influential band alive for three decades.

DFA is proud (and quite lucky!) to be the ones to announce the release of Pylon's debut LP "Gyrate", originally unleashed in 1980 and appearing here for the first ever time on CD, beautifully remastered from the original reels. The CD release also includes the addition of their landmark debut 7" single "Cool" b/w "Dub" (1979) and the 10" EP "Pylon!!". The CD also includes one track from 1979, never before released, entitled "Functionality". 16 tracks total, with liner notes from Fred Schneider (B-52's), Hugo Burnham (Gang of Four) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.), it is amazing something so praised in its day and still quite modern-sounding had yet to make its way onto CD.

Pylon's first single, "Cool" / "Dub" was released on Atlanta's DB Recs label in early 1980, earning a slew of excited press that immediately heralded Pylon as a major underground act. The band's jagged rhythms, scratchy guitar and insistent bass lines were the perfect foil for Vanessa's whisper-to-a-shriek vocals and the band's live shows were sweaty dance parties. Their debut LP Gyrate, was released in November of '80, also on DB, amid a heady time for the band. A string of sold-out club shows across the US was highlighted by east coast opening dates for the Gang of Four and an opening slot for The B-52's in New York's Central Park.

Glowing reviews came flooding in, including attention from Rolling Stone, Trouser Press and seemingly every other magazine on the planet. "Gyrate is a very good record that, in its humor, drive and purposeful innocence, sums up everything that's best about the new American rock bands," wrote Tom Carson in Rolling Stone. "[Pylon] bears scant relation to anything," cooed a writer in NME, defining them as a trailblazing band of the times. Pylon continued to tour and played more dates with like-minded acts Mission of Burma and Public Image Ltd.

The band followed up Gyrate with the like-minded album "Chomp" and continued the party on the road, both headlining as well as remaining the opening act of choice for many larger acts from overseas. But the minute the band became more a job than a party for it's members, they called it a day. No regrets. In 1990, the band quickly reared it's head one more time, released the college radio smash album "Chain" and toured stadiums opening for R.E.M. Then they disappeared again.

Since 2004, Pylon has been playing random surprise gigs around Georgia, slowly warming for something new, realizing the sound they so innocently yet confidently defined had hardly gone out of style. They had more admirers now than they ever imagined and DFA was certainly one of many. The song "Danger" had been a staple of James Murphy's DJ sets since 1999, much to the curiosity and bewilderment of a new generation of kids just discovering the many layers of the post punk movement. It is an honor for DFA to finally be able to bring this cherished music into the public domain in such a dignified manner.

We're supporting them here in Chapel Hill on 11/05.

It's pretty big honor for me.

Nice people. Great band. Not at all crap. Minimalist fun - a southern version of ESG.
